The Department for Aviation and Aeronautical Sciences is recruiting a Professor in Aeronautical Sciences

The Department for Aviation and Aeronautical Sciences conducts research and education within the aeronautical sciences, specifically focusing on the three areas sustainable aviation, unmanned aviation and aviation safety. The department’s research is in a development/build-up phase. Senior lecturers have been recruited to the three areas and now we recruit a professor to lead the development of the whole. The departments research facilites are located at Campus Ljungbyhed which offers a unique opportunity to do research, development and education with access to an airport infrastructure with a runway system as well as a controlled airspace.

The department runs two research infrastructures: The UAS Lab for development and applications of unmanned aerial systems, as well as a jet engine-lab for fundamental and applied research on sustainable aviation fuels and drive train technology.

The department is a certified commercial flight school (ATO) as well as an authorized drone school (ADS). These flight schools are run under the name Lund University School of Aviation, the only state-run civilian flight school in Sweden.

Subject

Aeronautical Sciences.

Subject description

The subject is broad and includes an integrated whole of the three research areas sustainable aviation, unmanned aviation and aviation safety. The area sustainable aviation focuses on technologies for sustainable power trains (e.g. bio fuel, electricity, hydrogen) and related engine technology. The area unmanned aviation focuses on development and applications of unmanned aerial systems (mission planning, interface design, system autonomy, system integration). The area aviation safety applies a system perspective in studies of interactions and relations between actors and artefacts at all levels between work (e.g. piloting or aircraft maintenance) and crafting legal and regulatory frameworks. The department’s professor is expected to create an integrated whole of the three areas so that they are run and developed in close collaboration, e.g. in research projects including several of the areas.
