ICOS Carbon Portal (hosted by Lund University) is part of ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) that provides high quality long-term measurements of greenhouse gas exchange in the domains of atmosphere, ecosystems and ocean.  Carbon Portal offers F.A.I.R. and open access to all ICOS high-quality and standardised greenhouse gas data, as well as scientific and educational products produced by our scientific users. The Carbon Portal is thus a 'one-stop shop' for all ICOS data products and contributed ‘elaborated’ data products that follows the FAIR principles. Carbon Portal also (co-)develops web services for the user community that support the scientific exploration of the data.

In order to complement the project coordination team and to handle the increasing amount of incoming manually contributed, mostly non-ICOS data, ICOS Carbon Portal is seeking an experienced IT - coordinator (in a role of what is usually better known as Data Steward).

Work duties
The main responsibilities related to this role are:

  • Quality check the metadata and data format of incoming data according to the FAIR principles and are consistent with our (meta)data model
  • Work together with the data contributors on setting up metadata definitions and data formats that follow the guidelines and applicable standards for FAIRness
  • Interact with and support data providers to setup and document workflows to efficiently transfer data and metadata into the Carbon Portal
  • Interact with data stewards and data managers of other research infrastructures and organisations to develop and apply common standards
  • Gather feedback from data providers and users and translate user requirements into proposals for improvements and new services of the data repository
  • Propose and help to implement innovations and improvements in the data repository and procedures

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in generation, collection, collation, validation, curation, extraction and analysis of data
  • Professional experience in supporting data providers and stakeholders on data preparation and data collection, conveying technical scientific concepts and/or regulatory requirements (both orally and in writing), drafting clear and concise guidance documents, manuals, technical specifications and provide service desk support
  • Professional experience in data stewardship, understanding data quality concepts and techniques, data cleansing, data validation to ensure high-quality data, contributing to the development of standards for data collection and related standard terminologies and ensuring correct access to/protection of personal/confidential data.
  • Proven use of data management/analysis software and programming languages used in analytics and data visualisation tools (e.g. R-Shiny, Python, R, Spark, or equivalent technologies).

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are useful, as well as independent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Fluent spoken and written English are required.

Other merits
A successful candidate would ideally have a background in Earth System Science or equivalent and a university degree. 

Mastery of one or more major European languages will be beneficial.

This is a permanent position with preferred start date as soon as possible. The scope of the employment is full time with a probation period of 6 months.
