We are looking for you who have a good ability to develop, lead and carry out high-quality education and research in the field of Middle Eastern Studies. We need to expand our staff with a teacher who has expertise in the political and social development of the Middle East.  Expertise in the field of qualitative methods is also required.

 

Duties and responsibilities

Work tasks mainly consist of teaching, course development, supervision and examination in courses given by the Department of Political Science and within the Graduate School at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Teaching takes place inter alia on courses dealing with political and social developments in the Middle East. This includes teaching on the emergence of the state system, the causes of authoritarianism, ideological divisions between Islamists and secularists, and ethnic and sectarian identities. The teaching duties also include methodology courses and courses in research design. Teaching activities consist of lectures, seminars, supervision and examination. The language of instruction is English. Work duties also include course administration, pedagogical development work and co-operation in teaching teams both within and between courses.

 

Eligibility requirements

Eligibility for employment as a senior lecturer is specified in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in Lund University's employment regulations.

Eligible for employment as senior lecturer is a person who has completed a doctoral degree in political science or in another subject, preferably in the social sciences, with clear relevance to the call. The qualified applicant must also have demonstrated pedagogical skills and have completed courses in higher education pedagogy or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge corresponding to at least five weeks.

 

Assessment criteria

When assessing applicants, equal weight will be given to scientific and teaching expertise. Emphasis will also be placed on administrative and other skills that are relevant to the subject matter and duties of the post.

Requirements for the position are:

- PhD in political science

- Experience in teaching courses dealing with political and social developments in the Middle East

- Experience in research in the field above

- International publication in the field above

- Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written

- Documented teaching portfolio and proven pedagogical track record

- Good ability to co-operate with colleagues and other staff at the department.

 

Meritorious for the position is:

- Experience in teaching research design and qualitative methods

 

Applicants should have documented ability and suitability in other respects needed to fulfil the tasks well.

The degree of expertise that is a requirement for eligibility for the position shall apply as the basis for assessment when appointing a senior lecturer.
