Description of the workplace 

The Department of History is a large department encompassing three subjects: History, Human Rights and East and South-East Asian Studies. It has more than 80 teaching staff and researchers. The Department also has a large doctoral education programme, including a National Graduate School in Historical Studies. Work duties and areas of responsibility 

We are looking for an early modern historian who can contribute to the VR project ”New Princes: Duke John of Östergötland (1589–1618) and Archduke Charles of Austria (1590–1624)” (Swedish Research Council, 2021-00964). The project focuses on the position of younger princely siblings in early modern absolutist states, for whom traditional roles as, for instance, provincial governors, were no longer considered suitable or desirable. The two princes that are the focus of the research project serve as case-studies for how such princes developed new social roles, but other case-studies are possible as well.  The project leader will focus on the Austrian side of the project, while the researcher will focus on the Swedish side. The researcher’s task will be to conduct research on sibling dynamics, particularly among brothers, in princely and aristocratic families from a social and political perspective. For this reason, it is desirable that the applicant is familiar with early modern Swedish history, in particular dynastic and court history, and can contribute to wider discussions on state formation and dynastic history in Europe. 

The main task of the appointee will be to:

• conduct independent research of high international standards, but also to contribute to the development of early modern research at Lund university. 
• organise research seminars or workshops. 
• the appointee will not be expected to be physically present at the department, but this will be appreciated. 

Qualifications 

Requirements for employment are:

• PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, completed preferably within the last ten years. Under special circumstances – parental leave, illness or similar – the PhD may have been completed earlier. A certificate supporting these reasons is to be submitted with the application.  
• Good reading skills for older Swedish handwriting
• Good knowledge in English, in speech and writing

Additional qualifications for the position are:

• PhD in a subject with a historical focus
• A research profile focused on the early modern period
• Independence, collaborative skills and scientific curiosity
• Good cooperation skills 

Further information 

The employment is fixed-term employment for 3 months with a scope of 50 percent with the first day of employment on February 1, 2025 or as agreed.
