Postdoctoral research fellow at the unit for Celiac Disease and Diabetes

Description of the workplace
The research group Unit for Diabetes and Celiac Disease, within the Department of Clinical Sciences in Malmö, conducts research on the genetically related autoimmune diseases celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, and thyroiditis, which are commonly seen in children. The research has been at the forefront of scientific discovery for several years. The head of the research group is Associate Professor Daniel Agardh. Work duties
At Lund University, a postdoctoral position is intended to provide opportunities for scientific and pedagogical merits. Primarily, there will be room to conduct research, but also for some higher education pedagogy. Teaching may also be part of the duties.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Celiac Disease and Diabetes group, your primary tasks will include:

• Applying bioinformatics and biostatistical analyses to map the causes of the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D), celiac disease, and thyroiditis.
• Performing statistical analyses for genetic studies in both animal models and humans.
• Building, maintaining, and managing a database with extensive data sets.
• Participating in the supervision and training of students, researchers, and other group members.
• Writing and publishing high-quality scientific articles and contributing to the academic environment within the research groups.
• Taking the lead on applications for competitive research funding.
• Participating in regular internal meetings and collaborating both internally and with external partners.
• Representing the research group and presenting research results at national and international conferences and workshops.

Performing other tasks within the research group as needed.

Eligibility
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. This eligibility requirement needs to be met no later than the time when the employment decision is made, and evidence that this requirement is met needs to have been sent in by this time at the latest. Candidates should have completed their PhD degree no more than three (3) years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier. These circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical work, positions of trust within trade union organizations or other similar circumstances.

Basis for assessment     
At Lund University, employment as a postdoctoral researcher provides opportunities for scientific and pedagogical merit. There is mainly room for merit in research, but also for certain higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may be included in the tasks.

For the employment as a postdoctoral research, scientific ability will primarily be taken into account.

Qualifications

Additional requirements for the position are:

• A doctoral degree in a biomedical field or a related field, obtained within the last three years.
• Previous research experience in international collaboration analyzing risk factors for type 1 diabetes.
• Solid experience with statistical analyses and large-scale data analysis.
• Proven knowledge of relevant programming languages (e.g., R), preferably demonstrated through certifications.
• Experience working with large-scale sequencing data.
• Experience in managing and administering databases.
• Documented ability to secure external funding through research grants.
• Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Meritorious for the position are:

• Experience in bioinformatics and biostatistical analyses.
• Handling large datasets in LINUX/UNIX environments, transferring anonymized data in international collaborations with both the EU and the USA.
• Completed basic immunology course.
• Practical laboratory experience.
• Experience in writing ethical applications.
• Experience teaching and supervising students/junior researchers.
• Documented experience presenting research results at international conferences and in popular science formats.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time employment limited to 2 years, with a possible extension for up to one additional year. Preliminary start date 2024-12-01 or according to agreement. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral researcher”) between SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated November 19, 2021.
