The vacancy is located at the centre for analysis and synthesis at the department of chemistry. However, approximately half of the work will be conducted in collaboration with other research groups within NanoLund. The centre for analysis and synthesis hosts the Lund University research infrastructure for high resolution electron microscopy. Here, several independent research groups explore e.g. ceramic materials at extreme conditions and the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials. The infrastructure is linked to the national network ARTEMI, through which there will be good opportunities for visits to similar research facilities at other major Swedish Universities. NanoLund brings together researchers within chemistry, physics and mechanical engineering sciences with common interests in designing, characterizing and utilizing nanostructured materials.
In this project you will work with characterization of nitride-based materials with a wide range of applications, for example high frequency electronics and resilience enhancing coatings. Your main tools will be focused ion beam (FIB) milling for sample preparation followed by transmission electron microscopy for the actual characterization. You will have particular responsibility for FIB, where you will be expected to work independently with sample preparation to support the research in the group. The research relates to linking structure and composition at the atomic scale in the materials to their performance. Using the unique in situ electron microscope at the department of chemistry, you will get the opportunity to explore how the materials are affected by the high temperatures and reactive environments they will encounter in their respective use cases. As a FIB expert you will assist other researchers and PhD students in sample preparation and training in the use of the equipment.
