Trials in Transition: A Study of Video Links in Courts
The postdoctoral researcher will work in the research project “Trials in Transition: A Study of Video Links in Courts” funded by The Swedish Research Council (VR). The project is led by Lisa Flower.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how justice and the practice of it can be preserved in a digitalized environment. Trials in Transition will investigate how participation in trials via video link is experienced and accomplished. The methodology includes a qualitative approach including ethnographic observations of criminal and civil trials together with interviews. The results of the study will contribute to understanding the impact of digital technologies on justice.

Duties
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary study of the ways in which digital technologies shape courtroom interactions. The postdoctoral researcher will be carrying out fieldwork and other related duties in the Swedish context and contribute to various project activities and outputs, including publishing findings in international journals, participating in workshops and other similar events, and presenting key findings at international conferences.
The postdoctoral position is planned to commence on 1st March 2025.
Qualifications
Applicants must have obtained a PhD degree in the social sciences or related discipline.
This position is intended for a junior researcher with an emphasis on candidates who have completed their PhD no more than three years prior to the expected start date of 1st March 2025.
Assessment criteria
The research profile of the applicant, the quality of the PhD dissertation, the ability to develop and conduct high quality research, as well published or forthcoming articles in sociology or related disciplines in the social sciences, play an important role in assessing suitability.
Good collaboration and communication skills are required. Excellent written and oral proficiency in Swedish and English are also required.
Experience of conducting ethnographic fieldwork and a background in interactionist and/or emotion sociological theory are merits.
