The Department of Design Sciences at LTH, Lund University, is recruiting a professor in Artistic didactics. 

With this appointment, Lund University of Technology (LTH) wants to invest in artistic educational competence. The appointment aims to strengthen the intertwining between educational and research environments within qualitative methods. In the role, you will be a unifying force for the artistically oriented courses at LTH, both in the form of creating and supporting research environments, integrating research into education, and nationally and internationally contributing to the facilitation of new knowledge in art, technology and society.

The position is located at division of Industrial Design at Department of Design Sciences at LTH, Lund University. Design Sciences is an interdisciplinary department that integrates design, technology and people in its research and education. Industrial design is a creative and intellectual activity that questions, shapes and visualizes objects, systems and interactions. The discipline of design is embedded in cultural frameworks. Today, almost any issue can be the subject of design processes. Our industrial design education in a university environment develops continuously in relation to ongoing changes in society, business and research. For this position, we are looking for a professor who can actively and with great commitment take on the overall responsibility for didactic development of LTH's artistic educations.

More specifically, this subject is linked to how practical knowledge can be conveyed, communicated and assessed in the artistic process, how it is expressed in both research and education, and how this can be quality assured. With innovative ideas and in close collaboration with CEE (Center for Engineering Education), you are expected to develop the operations in a creative spirit that enriches the industrial design environment specifically and LTH as a whole. You are also expected to lead and participate in research projects related to the subject, apply for your own external research funds, and participate in the national and international research debate. These work duties require a high level of physical presence. The Industrial Design School is rooted in a large campus that encourages an interdisciplinary approach and professional interaction.

Subject description

Artistic didactics connects practical studies in and about artistic subjects with didactic work and analysis in higher education. The subject is cross-border and deals with learning in relation to aesthetic perspectives and artistic expression for the individual and for society at large. Research is based on experience learning that is linked in various ways to creative understanding and action. A common thread in the research is different perspectives on democratic participation, norm-critical perspectives on learning, artistic exploratory processes, and exploration of the role of art in society.

Work duties

Work duties include:

  • Development and teaching of higher education pedagogical courses in practice-based assessment and examination in the artistic field, at both basic and advanced level (first, second and third cycle studies).
  • Work to strengthen competence and quality assurance of artistic education.
  • Work to strengthen competence around qualitative methods, ethics and assessment of students' work.
  • Supervision of degree projects, doctoral students and teachers.
  • Work on developing the research environment
  • Actively apply for external research funding
  • Research within the subject area
  • Develop and teach research supervisor training on an artistic basis.
  • Develop the postgraduate subject industrial design with a new artistic focus. More specifically, the focus is on developing criteria for assessment and strengthening LTH's disciplines that work with artistic and cross-disciplinary methods in research.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society, both nationally and internationally.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment as a Professor requires that the applicant has:

  • Demonstrated research expertise.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Assessment criteria

When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, where teaching expertise is of greater importance than research expertise.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to Professor:

  • A very good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • A very high level of teaching skills, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • A good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • A good ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Significant documented research experience (e.g. from postdoc or doctoral studies) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector.
  • Experience in developing educational material and courses in artistic didactics in higher education
  • Documented management experience and a good ability to lead groups within academia.
  • International experience.
  • Collaborative skills, initiative and the ability to solve work tasks independently.

The extent to which the applicant, through their experience and skills, may complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, departmental innovation, and how they can contribute to the future development of the department will also be taken into consideration.
