Subject description

You will be part of the competence centre NextG2Com, which unites researchers and industrial partners to develop the next generation infrastructure for communication and data processing.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a postdoctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development. 

As a postdoctoral researcher, your primary focus will be on conducting high-impact research in advanced computing solutions for 6G wireless networks. This includes the development, integration, and optimization of Kubernetes for specialized hardware platforms. You will actively engage in research projects, collaborate with both academic and industry partners, and contribute to third-cycle courses as part of your role. Additionally, you will lead the implementation and validation of your research outcomes, ensuring they meet both scientific rigor and industry relevance.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will play a pivotal role in this endeavor. Your work will involve adapting Kubernetes to the LISA 6G testbed, built on a Xilinx hardware platform, enabling seamless support for XR applications, and managing dynamic task migration across the network. This includes developing a version of Kubernetes tailored for ARM architecture and creating a sophisticated controller to handle task migration with minimal latency.

Your contributions will be key to building the software infrastructure required to leverage the full potential of the advanced hardware being developed. By ensuring efficient task management across a distributed network, you will help create a flexible and powerful computing framework that underpins the 6G networks of tomorrow.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Conducting research on integrating computing platforms with wireless systems.
  • Developing software solutions to support dynamic application requirements on the Kubernetes platform.
  • Implementing and testing solutions on relevant testbeds.
  • Analyzing data, documenting results, and contributing to scientific publications.
  • Collaborating with project partners to achieve research objectives.

The position involves travel for meetings, conferences, and collaboration with partners. 

Qualification requirements 

Appointment to a postdoctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of computer networking.
  • Knowledge and experience of Cloud Computing and Linux.
  • The ability and desire to work both inter-disciplinary, independently and in small teams.

Assessment criteria 

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a postdoctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills. 

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge of wireless systems.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years with start date as soon as possible according to agreement but no later than October 1, 2025. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
