 Subject description
Research associated with an ERC-project: PALEOCORE: Core dynamics on millennial timescales. Within the project we will develop new and more efficient methods to reconstruct changes in Earth’s magnetic field and the fluid flow at the top of the core based on palaeomagnetic data, e.g. from lake or marine sediments.

Work duties include

  • Investigations of different types of distortions that affect the geomagnetic field signal captured in sedimentary palaeomagnetic records. This will include studies of distortions related to changes in the depositional environment, that can be traced using various proxy data, as well as distortions related to the orientation and potential rotation of the core barrel during the extraction of the sediments.
  • Defining practical parameterizations of identified distortions that can be used to model and correct for their effects on the data.
  • Including these additional parameters to further develop the existing Python package sedprep,  designed to preprocess sedimentary palaeomagnetic data by estimating important parameters associated with different types of data distortions (Bohsung et al., 2024, doi:10.22541/essoar.172202701.16255423/v1).

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in geophysics/physics/mathematics.
  • Extensive experience with Bayesian modelling and Gaussian processes.
  • Extensive worklife experience with developing software in Python.
  • Worklife experience with modelling Earth’s magnetic field based on palaeomagnetic data.
  • Good cooperation and communication skills.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Scientific publications linked to the research project.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
