The Centre for Mathematical Sciences has around 150 employees, with approximately 40 in the division Mathematics, Faculty of Science, where this position is situated. Research at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences is conducted in Algebra, Complex Analysis, Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory, Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Differential Geometry, Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis, Image Analysis, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, as well as Mathematical Statistics, Probability Theory, and Mathematics Education. The degree courses lead to bachelor, master, and PhD degrees and, at the Faculty of Engineering, to civil engineering degrees.

Within algebra, research is conducted on infinite groups, especially profinite groups and branch groups. The research has connections to the theory of finite p-groups, Hausdorff dimension and fractals, as well as algebraic geometry, computer science and dynamical systems. Furthermore, research is conducted in polynomial algebras, algorithmic algebra, Lie algebra theory and representation theory, as well as algebraic topology and finite groups.

Type of employment: Fixed-term position, 6 years, in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the opportunity for promotion to senior lecturer.

Job description
Employment as an associate senior lecturer is a career-development position which aims to develop the holder’s independence as a researcher and educator.

The Faculty of Science offers a career programme for associate senior lecturers

In order to support the formation of a research team, resources corresponding to a doctoral studentship will be linked to the appointment.

The principal assignments are the following:

  • Research in the subject area.
  • Teaching at basic, advanced and research level, in particular algebra-related courses.
  • Supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students.
  • Applying for external research funding.
  • Engagement with wider society, e.g., through popular science presentations for upper secondary students.
  • Professional development and some administrative tasks.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research group in algebra, e.g., through research cooperation and seminar activities. It would be desirable to strengthen cooperation with other universities, both nationally and internationally.

In time, the successful candidate is expected to participate in leadership tasks within teaching and/or research at the department.

The position includes teaching, which is currently at most 30% of a full-time position, calculated over the entire period of employment. The content of the work duties, as well as the relative allocation between research and teaching, may change over time.

Qualification requirements 
A person is qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer if they have been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. A person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds. 

Specifically, this position requires a PhD in mathematics.

Teaching staff at Lund University are required to be suitable for the position and to have the general ability to fulfil their work duties well.

Assessment criteria
Good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research and possess teaching skills. The main assessment criteria are research and teaching expertise, with greater emphasis placed on research expertise. 

The requirements for the position are:

  • Documented scientific skills in algebra.
  • High international level as a researcher, relative to career length, as evidenced by publications in academic journals of high quality.
  • Postdoctoral experience of relevance for the subject.
  • Experience of teaching in mathematics at university level.
  • Ability to teach in English. 

Specific qualifications of additional merit:

  • Documented ability to obtain research grants from external funding bodies is a strong merit.
  • Experience of leading and developing courses is meritorious. A reflective approach to teaching is also a merit.
  • Documented experience of interaction with the society at large and in communicating science and the value of research to society is likewise relevant and a merit.

Great consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive and independence, as well as how the applicant’s experience and expertise can be judged to complement and strengthen the existing research and education within the department. It is important that the application shows how the applicant can strengthen the research and education within the department.

When appointing teaching staff, Lund University’s Appointment Rules apply, in addition to the provisions set out in the Higher Education Ordinance.

We expect non-Swedish speaking staff members to acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish to be able to teach and communicate with the different bodies of the University in this language within three years.

Promotion
To be promoted from Associate Senior Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, language level B1* in Swedish must be achieved.
*Common European Framework of Reference for Language, CEFR.

An associate senior lecturer is, on application, to be promoted to senior lecturer employed for an indefinite period if they have the required qualifications and are deemed to be suitable with reference to the assessment criteria established by the Faculty of Science when applying for promotion. An associate senior lecturer can only apply for promotion once. 

Assessment criteria for promotion to a permanent position as senior lecturer:

  1. Good national and international standing as a researcher
    The applicant conducts research of high quality that garners attention nationally and internationally
    The applicant conducts research with a clear, independent profile.
  2. Good teaching ability
    The applicant has good knowledge of the subject and can apply these in practice when teaching.
    The applicant has good teaching skills and demonstrates an ability to develop their teaching within the subject area. 
    The applicant has a reflective approach to teaching and learning.
    The applicant has five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education, or the equivalent.
  3. Ability to participate in the supervision of doctoral students
    The applicant has documented experience and the ability to supervise doctoral students.
    The applicant has a reflective approach to the supervision of doctoral students.
    The applicant has at least two weeks´ training in supervision, or the equivalent.
  4. Ability to engage with wider society and communicate their activities
    The applicant has documented experience and the ability to engage with wider society and communicate their activities.
  5. General ability to lead and develop activities
    The applicant has documented experience of and ability in academic leadership.
