The research project examines the environmental history of the concept of ecocide, the destruction of the environment by humans. It is divided into two parts, moving from perspectives on ecocide as a crime in wartime to peacetime. First, it explores discussions about the impacts of warfare on the environment throughout the 20th century until the concept of “ecocide” was coined in 1970. Second, it examines how scientific, activist and legal debates regarding ecocide evolved between the Vietnam War to the establishment of the International Criminal Court.  While adopting a historical perspective and drawing on archival and oral sources, the ultimate aim of the project is to inform discussions on ecocide as an international crime, and its role in transformation to more sustainable and just societies.
