Postdoctoral position in traffic safety

Description of the workplace

Transport and Roads offer a unique and open environment for advanced research on traffic safety and behaviour. The group counts six senior researchers (postdocs and senior lecturers) and three PhD students. On the availability of the group, there is a traffic simulation lab with an advanced driving simulator. The group has several active projects in the field of traffic safety, European and national. 

The post-doctoral position is open in conjunction with one European Research Council project and one Horizon Europe Project.

Subject description

The main topic is evaluating the drivers’/road users’ behaviour when interacting in actual or future mobility scenarios, using qualitative and quantitative analysis. The use of simulation and the set-up of simulation scenarios will be part of the research activities.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity for further development. 

You will have particular responsibility for complementing the ongoing research on traffic safety carried out at Lund University with behavioural aspects and, in connection with this, to develop your own research field further. 

Detailed description of the work duties:

• Research within the subject area
• Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
• Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
• Actively seeking external research funding
• Collaboration with industry and wider society
• Administration related to the work duties listed above

There will be travel for meetings and conferences within and possibly also outside of Europe.

Qualification requirements 

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
• You have experience in behavioural studies that involve connected and automated vehicles and their interaction in open traffic.
• You have experience in experimental and theoretical studies on behavioural adaptation in road traffic. 
• You have knowledge of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods within the subject of road safety.
• Personal qualities such as independence and the ability to collaborate are required.
• You have experience using driving simulators of various fidelity levels.

Assessment criteria 

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

• A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
• Teaching skills. 

It’s considered an additional qualification if you:

• Have proven experience in behavioural studies involving connected and automated vehicles.
• Have experience with using statistical tools such as SPSS, R or other software.
• Have demonstrated experience using driving simulators with various fidelity levels for human-in-the-loop research.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).

Start in May 2025 or by agreement.
