Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Department of Energy Sciences

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace

The position is located at the division of Fluid Mechanics within the Department of Energy Sciences. At the division of Fluid Mechanics, we conduct research in various fields including development of mathematical models for design and optimization of turbomachinery, reactive fluid dynamics, multi-phase and turbulent flows, innovative technologies for biomass conversion, neural network systems and artificial intteligence for more efficneint mathematical and computational approaches.

Subject description

The work involves design and optimization of various types of turbomachinery. Application areas of turbomachinery are very wide and diverse, from main engines and fuel pumps of the airplanes to stationary turbomachines inside the power plants. The design and optimization process involve development of mathematical models for the components of both axial and radial turbomachines. The applicant is therefore expected to have a strong background in mathematical sciences or engineering. Due to the strong coupling of the turbomachinery devices with power production units, it is desired that the applicant has working knowledge in power electronics and control theory. In addition, knowledge of artificial intelligence and neural network systems are considered a great advantage.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Detailed description of the work duties, include:

  • Perform outstanding research in mathematical model development and optimization of turbomachinery components
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

You need to have an outstanding degree either in mathematical sciences or engineering. Working knowledge in power electronics, control theory and even artificial intelligence and neural network systems is considered a great advantage.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Independence in research and ability to collaborate in a wider community
  • PhD in mathematical sciences or engineering
  • Working knowledge in power electronics and control theory
  • Working knowledge in artificial intelligence and neural networks

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Excellent knowledge in mathematical sciences and model development
  • Working knowledge in power electronics and control theory
  • Artificial intelligence and neural networks
  • Independence in research and the ability to collaborate in a wider team.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
