Postdoctoral position in Turbomachinery Aerodynamics

Description of the workplace

The position is located at the Division of Fluid Mechanics within the Department of Energy Sciences. At the division, we conduct research in various fields, including the development of mathematical models for the design and optimization of turbomachinery, reactive fluid dynamics, multi-phase and turbulent flows, innovative technologies for biomass conversion, neural network systems, and artificial intelligence for more efficient mathematical and computational approaches.

Subject description

The work focuses on the design and optimization of various types of turbomachin-ery. Turbomachinery's application areas are wide and diverse in this open position, from airplane main engine low-pressure turbines and fuel pumps to stationary tur-bomachines inside power plants. The design and optimization process involves de-veloping mathematical models for the components of both axial and radial tur-bomachines. The applicant is, therefore, expected to have a strong background in aerodynamics and aerodynamic methods and tools.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a postdoctoral position are conducting research within the subject description. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the researcher's independence and to create the opportunity for further development.

Detailed description of the work duties, including:

• Perform outstanding research in optimization of radial- and axial tur-bomachinery components in 1D, 2D, 2D Blade-to-Blade and CFD. As well as design tool development for the subject.
• Teaching in the first, second, and third cycles of studies
• Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
• Actively seeking external research funding
• Collaboration with industry and wider society
• Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a postdoctoral position requires that the applicant have a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who graduated no more than three years before the last day for application. Under special circum-stances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• Personal qualities required, e.g., independence, ability to cooperate
• PhD in a relevant field

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. It is intended as an initial step in a career, and the applicants will be assessed primarily based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assess-ment criteria:

• Ability to develop and conduct high-quality research within the radial- and axial turbomachinery design and aerodynamics field.

Other qualifications:

• Good knowledge of mathematics and geometry model development
• Independence in research and the ability to collaborate in a wider team.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills com-plement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and how they can contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
