Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
The position is located at the Department of Electrial and Information Technology, within the Division of Secure and Networked Systems. The division has 18 senior researchers and about 20 PhD students. The division has two main research groups, Networked Systems and Security, and the position is located within Networked Systems. The group has a specific focus on applied research on networked applications over the cellular networks. In our 5G-lab, we have access to a local and complete 5G network, with a core network, base station, cloud-based applications and distributed antenna systems. The division has a long experience of close research collaborations with relevant industry, both locally, nationally and internationally.
The position is aimed at bridge the department’s research within networked systems and radio systems, which is mainly performed within the Division for Communication Engineering. The Division for Communication Engineering, performs world-leading applied research on radio communications, in particular within the areas of Massive MIMO and the successor Distributed MIMO.
The position will be closely connected with the VINNOVA Competence center NextG2Com (nextg2com.lu.se), and it will be part of the strategic research area within IT and mobile communications ELLIIT (elliit.se), which is a collaboration between Lund University, Linköping University, Halmstad University, and Blekinge Institute of Technology. In Lund, ELLIIT covers four departments: Electrical and Information Technology, Computer Science, Automatic Control, and the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. In total, we are about 200 researchers, wherof about 110 PhD students, performing to a large extent cross-disciplinary research. In Lund, ELLIIT is part of the Faculty of Engineering’s (LTH’s) Research profile AI and Digitalisation, which means that the position is in line with LTH’s general research strategy.
Wireless Networks
The position includes research within next-generation wireless network systems (6G and beyond), using distributed antenna systems and an integrated computing infrastructure for cloud-based off-loading of real-time computing, for example aimed at advanced AI systems. The next-generation wireless network systems (6G and beyond) must provide a good Quality of Service (QoS) for advanced connected mobile and intelligent applications (e.g. connected vehicles, smart industry, robotics etc.). These applications require well-functioning wireless network systems, with both extremely low latencies, robust and energy efficient connections, and an infrastructure that provides high performance edge computing. For this to work, the wireless network system must have an integrated infrastructure where radio systems, network protocols and application software both cooperate and exchange information with each other.
For high-quality research within this area, it is required that the applicant has both expertise within distributed antenna systems, as well as expertise within radio- and computing infrastructures for 5G/6G systems. For high-quality applied research, which is performed within NextG2Com and other relevant research projects at the department, it is required to have good profiency of experimental research activities and experimental reseach methods, i.e documented experience of research that requires experimental tesbeds with real-time requirements and measurements in real environments.
