The Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, Faculty of Engineering, invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in Semiconductor Technology.

The position is located at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology, within the Division of Electromagnetism and Nanoelectronics. The division has 15 senior researchers and about 20 doctoral students, and maintains strong collaboration with industry. Within the division, we work across a broad field ranging from electromagnetic theory to physical electronics and semiconductor devices. Our research focuses on a wide range of applications, from THz electronics and advanced calculations of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with material structures, to neuromorphic structures for artificial intelligence. We also work with quantum and cryogenic electronics, advanced low-power devices and circuit concepts for the Internet of Things, power electronics, and the design and evaluation of metamaterials. Our teaching includes courses in electromagnetism, basic and high-frequency electronics, as well as advanced device physics, at both undergraduate and graduate levels and within doctoral education.

Subject
Semiconductor Technology

Subject description
Semiconductor technology forms the backbone of all electronics based on semiconductor components, such as transistors and diodes. This is a dynamic and wide-ranging field that spans from fundamental materials physics to semiconductor processing and component characterization, with strong ties to electronic systems. At the Division of Electromagnetism and Nanoelectronics, we have extensive experience in research involving nanotechnology and semiconductor processing. Our research focuses on the fabrication and characterization of advanced electronic components for a variety of cutting-edge applications, including high-frequency electronics, artificial intelligence hardware, cryogenic electronics, and power electronics. A key emerging area in our research portfolio is the heterogeneous integration of diverse chips and components, which is expected to play a vital role in electronics of the future.

This subject area also includes academic leadership responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent research profile, contribute actively to collaborative projects within the division, and engage in larger interdisciplinary research initiatives

Work duties
Employment as an assistant professor is a tenure track position, which aims for the holder to develop their independence as a researcher and educator. The work duties mainly involve research and teaching. The position includes the opportunity to undertake five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education.

For this position, we are specifically seeking expertise in the fabrication, characterization, and implementation of semiconductor components and circuits for electronic applications. Relevant backgrounds include fabrication, characterization (DC and RF), and integration of III-V technologies. We are particularly interested in candidates with a documented interest in research and contributions toward development at higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs 3–5). One possible focus of the position may be packaging and assembly, i.e., the heterogeneous integration of III-V technology with other types of semiconductor components and materials.

Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Operation of advanced measurement equipment
  • Active participation in competence center.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Qualification requirements for employment as an assistant professor are fulfilled by someone who has been awarded a doctorate or has the corresponding research competence.

Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a doctorate or achieved the equivalent competence within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an assistant professor. However, someone who has been awarded a doctorate or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds. Special grounds are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria
For appointment to assistant professor, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and carry out high quality research.
  • Teaching ability.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Significant documented research experience (e.g. from postdoc or doctoral studies) from another university/institute or relevant experience from industry/public sector.
  • Experience in cleanroom work for the fabrication of semiconductor devices, or experience in high-frequency electrical characterization of semiconductor devices.
  • Collaborative skills, initiative and the ability to solve work tasks independently, as well as a demonstrated interest in leadership.

Other qualifications

  • Experience in research collaboration within strong research environments.

The extent to which the applicant, through their experience and skills, may complement and strengthen ongoing research, undergraduate education, departmental innovation, and how they can contribute to the future development of the department will also be taken into consideration.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 6 years. The employment is regulated in accordance with Chapter 4 Section 12a§ HEA. The purpose of the appointment is for the teacher to be given the opportunity to develop research autonomy and acquire the scholarly and teaching qualifications required for eligibility for appointment as a senior lecturer.
