Description of the workplace
Lund University Hospital’s Clinic for Infectious Diseases is a hub of cutting-edge research and clinical expertise, where specialists like Adam Linder and the team at the Infection Medicine Proteomics (IMP) lab, led by Professor Johan Malmström, are dedicated to advancing mass spectrometry to understand the molecular mechanisms of bacterial infections and sepsis. This collaborative environment fosters innovative research in early diagnostics, new treatment options, and long-term outcomes, ultimately aiming to improve preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies for severe infections.

The project will be a collaboration between Drs. Adam Linder and Johan Malmström. The research project aims to develop a new approach to treating sepsis by focusing on disease tolerance instead of directly targeting the pathogen. The goal is to identify new therapeutic markers and understand the time windows for optimal treatment efficacy, which could lead to improved methods for treating sepsis.

Work duties and areas of responsibility

As a research engineer, your duties will be divided into two main activities: Delineating mechanisms controlling tolerance by disrupting mitochondrial protein synthesis and defining treatment windows and characterizing the organ damage-limiting effects of tetracyclines in sepsis.

The following tasks will be performed:

• Preparation of mouse organ samples for proteomics-based characterization of various organs.
• Preparation of primary human neutrophils and monocytes for proteomics and metabolomics.
• Reading literature to find protocols to get a sense of how to prepare samples. Additionally, you will contact the Scilife lab metabolomics node in Umeå to obtain protocols from them for sample preparation and send the samples for MS analysis.
• Analyzing data using R scripts.

Qualifications

The following qualifications are required for the position:

• Master’s degree in Biomedicine or equivalent.
• Experience in inflammation research, THP-1 cell culture, proteomics (sample preparation and analysis), and working with R.
• Proven project management skills with strong communication abilities.
• Experience working both independently and as part of a team.

Meritorious for the position

• Previous experience in a research setting where the above-mentioned skills
• Experience in the ongoing described project, is of specifical merit

The employment is a fixed-term employment (SÄVA) full-time with desired first day of employment June 1st and end date 24th of October 2025.
