Lund University School of Economics and Management is one of eight faculties within Lund University. At the Department of Informatics there is pioneering research and business collaboration. We have an attractive undergraduate education providing our students advantageous academic degrees for working life or postgraduate education. We coordinate the system science graduate program at the School of Economics, and offer independent courses and the international master’s program in information systems.

Lund University announces at least one position as doctoral student in informatics, specialising in “Digital Transformation”. The position is a full-time position and is placed at the Department of Informatics, Lund School of Economics and Management, Lund University.

Assigned duties

Those appointed to doctoral studentship shall primarily devote themselves to their studies, aimed to result in a doctoral degree. Work carried out during the studentship consists of participation in research projects as well as successful participation in postgraduate (third cycle) courses. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may also work, to a limited extent, with educational tasks and administration at the department of informatics. However, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 percent of full-time work.

The department needs to strengthen research and education in "Digital Transformation" defined as design, development, user perspectives, implementation and evaluation of information systems in areas such as Decision Support, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Information Security, Sustainability or Decision Management to support individuals, groups and organizations in their decision-making and work processes.

Eligibility / Admission requirements

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if they have:

  • Been awarded a second-cycle degree; or
  • Satisfied the requirements for courses comprising of at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle; or
  • Acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Other requirements

  • Good knowledge of English and Swedish, in speech and writing, is a requirement.
  • Knowledge and skills relevant to the dissertation work and the subject of study. These can be demonstrated through attached documents and during an interview
  • Relevant educational background and grades

Preferred qualifications

  • Assessed ability to work independently and ability to formulate and manage scientific problems. The assessment can, for example, be based on the Master’s thesis and a discussion about it during an interview
  • Ability to communicate in writing and orally
  • Other experiences relevant to doctoral education, e.g. professional and work experience
  • Quality and content of previous written work, such as a Master’s thesis
  • Ability to participate actively in the Department’s research environment

Basis of assessment

Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies.

Scientific quality of the applicant’s research proposal:

  • Ability to describe, question and discuss the current state of research
  • Sufficient clarity and logical coherence in the formulation of the aim and the research questions
  • Stringency of reasoning and analysis
  • Adequate selection of theory and methods

Consideration will also be given to good co-operative ability, drive and independence and how the applicant, through his/her experience and competence, is expected to supplement and strengthen ongoing work at the department.

The Department of Informatics is a small department, why collegial interaction and the individual's efforts are of great importance. It is important as a doctoral student to be structured, independent, take initiative, be persistent and have good collaboration skills. Another important aspect of the position is to actively participate in the department's work with applications for external funds, as well as to actively participate in the work of the teaching and research body for further development of the department.

Terms of employment

Fixed-term employment, maximum four years (full-time studies).

Only those admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral student position.
