Job Duties

We are looking for a colleague at the beginning of their academic career. The position includes research and teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels, with a particular focus on the criminology programs at the department. The position consists of 50% research and 50% teaching and possible administration.

The duties include conducting research of high international quality and delivering high-quality teaching at all educational levels. The holder of the position is expected to actively contribute to the positive development of our research environment, particularly in criminology, including publishing research internationally and applying for external research funding. Additionally, the holder is expected to contribute to the development of our educational offerings, especially the Bachelor's Programme in Criminology and the Master's Programme in Cultural Criminology. Teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish, but may also occur in English.

Eligibility

According to Lund University's employment regulations, a general requirement for teachers is to be suitable for and possess the necessary skills to fulfill the duties of the position.

To be eligible for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer, the applicant must have a PhD or an equivalent foreign degree in sociology or have achieved equivalent scientific competence. Priority will be given to applicants who have obtained their PhD or equivalent competence no more than five years before the application deadline, unless there are special reasons (e.g., parental leave or illness, see Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance).

Requirements Profile

Applicants must have a PhD in sociology (or equivalent scientific competence) and relevant teaching and research experience. Experience teaching within the department’s shared course offerings is desirable. High competence in qualitative and preferably ethnographic criminological research and teaching is particularly meritorious. Applicants whose native language is not Swedish are expected to acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish (spoken and written) within two years to teach in Swedish and participate actively in administrative and other relevant activities conducted in Swedish.

Applicants must demonstrate documented scientific proficiency. Having received external research funding is a merit. Applicants must also demonstrate documented pedagogical proficiency and teaching experience relevant to the department’s educational programs. The ability to work independently, responsibly, and in a structured manner in both teaching and research is required. Good collaboration skills are essential.

Assessment Criteria

This is a career-development position, and applicants who obtained their PhD no more than five years before the application deadline will be prioritized. Particular emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s potential for development in terms of scientific proficiency, especially within the criminological research environment. Scientific proficiency includes international publication, applying for external research funding, independent research, participation in international collaborations, and post-doctoral progression. Pedagogical skills and the ability to collaborate, including with external partners, are highly valued. Administrative skills are also considered. The relevance of the applicant’s research to the department’s criminological research environment will be taken into account. Top-ranked candidates will be invited to give a trial lecture, which will also be part of the assessment.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Associate Senior Lecturer employed under Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance shall, after application, be promoted to a permanent position as Senior Lecturer at the same university, provided that they:

Meet the eligibility requirements for a Senior Lecturer position, and are deemed suitable for such a position based on the assessment criteria established by the university in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 4a, second paragraph of the Higher Education Ordinance.

At the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University, applications for promotion must be submitted no later than three years and six months into the employment period. The assessment of eligibility and suitability is based on the scientific and pedagogical development during the employment period, with particular emphasis on the following criteria:

Well-documented scientific proficiency, including a proven track record as a researcher, with particular emphasis on international publication. Well-documented pedagogical proficiency, with emphasis on the ability to teach and supervise at various levels and to develop the quality and breadth of teaching competence over time. Good ability to engage with society and communicate research and development work. Proficiency in Swedish at a level required to perform common tasks in research, teaching, and administration. Completion of pedagogical training required for eligibility as a Senior Lecturer.
