About the Position

The division of Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary unit within a larger department that also includes Sociology and Social Anthropology, located at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University. We are now looking for an associate senior lecturer. The department hosts a prominent research environment with a strong foundation in queer and feminist theory and methodology. Researchers at the department are at the forefront of developing and critically examining various understandings of gender and gender relations, with a long-standing tradition of exploring gender and sexuality from an intersectional, postcolonial, and interdisciplinary perspective in both global and local contexts.

We are looking for a colleague who will contribute to the development of the department’s ambitions in queer and feminist theory and methodology and foster interdisciplinary synergies within the research environment.

Job Duties

The position includes both research and teaching across several of the department’s programs and courses, from undergraduate to advanced levels. 50% of the position is dedicated to teaching, including administrative duties. 50% is dedicated to research.

The incumbent is expected to contribute to the development and administration of educational programs and courses in Gender studies. Research should align with the department’s focus on queer and feminist theory and methodology. The candidate is also expected to actively contribute to the development of the department’s research and educational environment and to apply for external research funding. Teaching will span from undergraduate to master’s level.

Eligibility

For teaching staff at Lund University, a general eligibility requirement is to be suitable for and possess the overall ability necessary to successfully carry out the duties associated with the position, in accordance with Lund University's Appointment Rules.

To be eligible for the appointment as associate senior lecturer, the candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent foreign degree in Gender Studies or have achieved equivalent scholarly competence. Priority will be given to applicants who obtained their PhD no more than five years before the application deadline, unless special circumstances apply e.g., parental leave or illness (4 kap. 4 a § HF  (Higher Education Ordinance).

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate documented scholarly excellence in Gender studies. Securing external funding is considered a merit. Applicants should have teaching and research experience relevant to the position and strong experience in teaching and research aligned with the department’s academic profile. We also welcome applicants with experience in teaching within the departments’ joint course offerings. Documented pedagogical skills and relevant teaching experience are required. The candidate should be able to teach courses with diverse theoretical, methodological, and empirical content. Documented experience in teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels is particularly meritorious.

Strong collaboration skills are essential. International academic connections and interdisciplinary experience in teaching and research are also meritorious.

Assessment Criteria

As this is a career-development position, priority will be given to applicants who obtained their PhD within the last five years. Assessment will focus on the applicant’s potential for scholarly development, ability to advance Gender studies research in line with the department’s focus on queer and feminist theory and methodology, and ability to secure external research funding.

Scholarly excellence includes international publications, independent research, participation in international collaborations, and postdoctoral progression. Pedagogical skills and collaboration abilities are highly valued. Administrative skills are also considered.

Future Promotion

An associate senior lecturer employed under Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance shall, upon application, be promoted to a permanent position as senior lecturer at the same higher education institution, provided that the individual:

meets the eligibility requirements for a position as senior lecturer, and is, upon assessment, deemed suitable for such a position according to the assessment criteria established by the university in accordance with Section 4a, second paragraph of the Higher Education Ordinance.

At the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University, the application for promotion must be submitted no later than three years and six months into the appointment. The assessment of eligibility and suitability is based on the applicant’s scholarly and pedagogical development during the period of employment, with particular emphasis on the following criteria:

Well-documented scholarly excellence, including a demonstrated high level of research competence, with particular emphasis on international publications. Well-documented pedagogical excellence, with particular emphasis on the ability to teach and supervise at various levels, and on the development of quality and breadth in teaching competence over time. Progression in academic leadership, demonstrated through increased ability to develop, lead, and conduct education and research and/or engagement and responsibility in university-wide tasks. Strong collaboration skills and the ability to contribute to the development of the subject area and the department’s activities. Documented ability to prepare research proposals for external funding. Strong ability to engage with society and to communicate research and development work. Proficiency in Swedish sufficient to carry out common duties in research, teaching, and administration. Completion of pedagogical training required for eligibility as senior lecturer.

In the promotion assessment, equal weight will be given to pedagogical and scholarly excellence. If these requirements are met and the applicant is deemed suitable, promotion shall be granted.
