The Department of Clinical Sciences Malmö (IKVM) is now announcing a vacancy for a position at the doctoral program and employment as a doctoral student within Diabetes genetics.

The research group Genetics and Diabetes, conducts research in the field of precision medicine and metabolic complexity in type 2 diabetes. The research is at the forefront of the areas of precision medicine and genetics related to diabetes and its complications. You can read more about the research here. The group is led by Associate Professor Emma Ahlqvist and is based at the Clinical Research Centre in Malmö.

Description of the project 

This project will investigate cardiovascular disease in individuals with diabetes, primarily through genetic analyses in large patient and population cohorts.

Work duties and responsibilities

The main tasks of a doctoral student are to devote themselves to their doctoral education and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

In this project, under the supervision of Associate Professor Emma Ahlqvist, you will conduct research focused on cardiovascular disease and precision medicine in type 2 diabetes. We will use statistical and genetic approaches to analyze data from large cohorts to identify genetic variants and risk factors contributing to cardiovascular disease susceptibility and related traits. We will also examine how these interact with diabetes subtypes and environmental factors. Findings will be further explored through bioinformatic methods. Other techniques may include machine learning and mathematical modeling. Additional tasks within the research group may also be included.

Qualifications 


Basic eligibility for doctoral education is someone who has:

  • completed a degree at advanced level completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The requirements for special eligibility are met by someone who has:

  • at least 60 credits in the subject area of ​​medical science applicants must have knowledge equivalent to at least 3 years of upper secondary education in English.

Special requirements for the employment are:[AO4] 

  • A Master’s degree in bioinformatics or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge in biology, genetics, and statistics.
  • Experience with data processing tools such as R, Perl, and/or Python.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.

Meritorious for the position are:

  • Solid knowledge of diabetes, metabolism, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Experience working with large datasets.
  • Experience in large-scale genetic analysis such as GWAS.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The candidate should be motivated, self-directed, and persistent, with strong analytical skills. The ability to work independently as well as in a team is essential, requiring excellent collaboration and communication abilities. The candidate must be well-organized and detail-oriented, while also flexible and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.

About the employment

The position is a fixed-term position for a total of four years, 100% with a start date of September 1st 2025 or as agreed. The main rule is that employment at Lund University is conducted in Sweden, so you are expected to be able to perform your work on site in Malmö.
