Work duties

To date, very little is known on the impact of forest clear-cuts on Sweden's boreal forest ecosystems and their carbon balance, particularly regarding the early recovery years. This research project will use simulations of an ecosystem model and flux tower measurements to analyse scenarios of alternative reforestation strategies (after clear-cut) for different climate predictions.
The research assistant will be expected to analyse greenhouse gas measurements collected at an eddy-covariance flux tower. This includes processing raw data and postprocessing. The data will contribute to a scientific article.

  • Research within the subject area
  • Attending project meetings
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above
  • Publishing results in high-quality journals

Qualifications

  • University degree (preferably MSc or equivalent) in a natural science subject (e.g. environmental sciences, physical geography, atmospheric sciences, ecosystem analysis, ecology, biology).
  • In-depth background knowledge in greenhouse gas budgeting and carbon cycling, with focus on boreal forests in Sweden
  • Excellent numeric and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ecosystem modelling (LPJ-GUESS) and programming languages: R, Python
  • A publication record commensurate with the career stage
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to tackle research problems and to work in a team but also independently, and to complete activities on time

Other merits

  • Subject knowledge relating to forest ecology and forest management
  • Strong interest in programming and computational data analysis
  • Knowledge in handling of large data sets
  • Familiarity with data processing software for eddy-covariance data (e.g. EddyPro)
  • Experience with writing scientific publications in English

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to i.e. good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the administrative work within the unit/department, as well as contribute to its future development.
