Lund University, naturvetenskapliga fakulteten, kemiska institutionen

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

The Research engineer will work within  a national facility entitled “The national Center for High resolution Electron Microscopy”, nCHREM. nCHREM is a state-of-the-art facility for imaging and microanalysis.  Samples presently studied comprise surfactant and colloidal system (soft matter), biological/biochemical systems, nanostructured materials, thin films, composite materials, ceramics, semiconductors, catalysts, and alloys. We are also continuously developing the facility, aiming to be among the top EM laboratories in the world.

The instrumentation at  nCHREM contains a  a Philips 120 kV cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) with energy filtered imaging possibilities and accompanying lab facilities for cryogenic and biological  specimen preparation . This microscope will be replaced during 2016 by a JEOL 2200FS dedicated for cryogenic imaging and tomography. Furthermore, the instrumentation consists of a JEOL 3000F 300 kV high-resolution analytical (S)TEM, and a JSM 6700F field emission scanning electron microscope. A 300 kV Cs-corrected Hitachi 3300S designed as an ETEM, an Environmental TEM, is currently being installed at nCHREM.

The position is placed at the Division of Physical Chemistry which holds one of the largest local  user groups of the cryo-TEM facility. Since decades, the Division of Physical Chemistry conducts internationally very strong research in colloid and surface chemistry, focusing on Soft Matter.

Work description
The position is placed at the Division of Physical Chemistry – a division conducting world-leading research in the soft matter field. One of the major techniques for the division is cryo-TEM. The work will primarily be performed at nCHREM, as a part of the team responsible for this facility. The Research Engineer will mainly be responsible for the operation, service and maintenance of a dedicated cryo-TEM. The infrastructure, which will be installed during 2016, consists of a 200 kV FEG TEM, with energy filter, and equipped for tomography investigations. The work includes responsibility for the daily running of the microscope and of sample preparations. Daily running includes operating the microscope for non-expert users. The engineer will work closely together with researchers from different departments of Lund University, including graduate students. The engineer will also service external researchers from universities and industry. Responsibility for routine maintenance and more urgent maintenance tasks, as well as education and training of users, is included . The Research engineer will also have certain responsibilities for other equipment at nCHREM and in the Division of Physical Chemistry.

Applicants must hold a Swedish doctoral degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in chemistry or related fields. A high level of expertise is required from the relevant techniques; specifically, the applicant should have several years of experience in cryo–TEM, including specimen preparation, and expertise in tomography is advantageous. A background in soft matter science is required. Experience of teaching and training in the field is an advantage. Very good skills in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement for the position. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage. We place great emphasis on personal skills. These tasks require service orientation, good interpersonal skills, communication skills and teaching ability and interest. Further, it is important to be thorough, structured, responsible and self-sustaining.

The application should be sent in electronically using the link at the bottom of the ad. Applications should be written in English. The application should include a cover letter with justifications for why you are interested in the position, and, why you are a suitable candidate. Please also answer the specified questions below and if your answer is yes, please specify your experience etc. It should also include letter(s) of recommendations. The application should include a CV, diplomas or equivalent, and other items that you wish to invoke (copies of certificates, data references, list of publicatins, etc.).

  • Do you have documented experience in cryo-TEM and preparation of cryogenic samples?
  • Do you have experience in other (electron) microscopy techniques?
  • Do you easily adapt to working with people of different backgrounds?

We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
