Description of the Workplace

The Department of Economic History is research-intensive and employs approximately 70 individuals, including researchers, teachers, technical and administrative staff, and doctoral students. The department offers extensive doctoral education and coordinates two international Master's programmes as well as one Bachelor's programme. It has an established reputation for its broad research focus on long-term processes, where economic theory and quantitative methods serve as central tools. Particularly strong research areas include economic growth and structural change, innovation, energy and sustainability, development economics, economic demography, financial history, and education and labour markets. Lund University is now seeking a researcher in economic history.

The position is for 6 months, starting in January 2026, and is based at the Department of Economic History, School of Economics. The position is full-time (100%).

Subject Area and Duties

The subject area is economic history.

The duties include research within a project focusing on regional transformation and the development of employment across different occupations in the Swedish labor market. The tasks involve collaborating with our researchers to process occupational classifications, harmonize census data, develop machine learning models, run statistical models, and write research articles.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A completed doctoral degree in Economic History at the commencement of the project-based employment
  • Research expertise in Economic History, historical microeconometrics, and experience working with historical datasets at various levels of aggregation.
  • Since the source material concerns the Swedish labor market, proficiency in Swedish (both spoken and written) is required.

Preferred qualifications 

  • Research expertise with a focus on regional economics and labor markets.
  •  Knowledge of Stata, R, and Python is considered meritorious

Assessment Criteria

In the overall assessment of scientific skills, publication in journals or with publishers using an international peer-review system is strongly meritorious, as is experience of international collaboration and participation in research networks. The ability to work independently and produce scientific output is strongly meritorious for this position. Publications in economic history, especially those focusing on regional economics and labor markets, are particularly meritorious. The ability to engage with the wider community and communicate research findings will also be considered.

Consideration will be given to how the applicant’s experience and competence can complement and strengthen research and education within the department. Experience in teaching and supervision in economic history is meritorious.
