Description of the workplace

This position will be part of the Inorganic Nanomaterials research group within the Centre for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS) at the Department of Chemistry. We are a highly international unit and strive to maintain gender balance. Research at CAS focuses on inorganic, organic, polymer and materials synthesis, as well as advanced structural analysis and characterization, with applications spanning nanomaterials, energy storage, and catalysis.

Work duties

The primary duty of this position will be research within the subject area of lead-free piezo(electro)ceramic and electrochemical processes. The researcher will be responsible for designing and carrying out experiments aimed at understanding fundamental processes involved in solid-state formation, structure-property relationships, piezoelectric, electrocatalysis, and electrochemical energy applications. The researcher will also have responsibility for research infrastructure related to powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The focus will be on niobates, tantalates, group V dichalcogenides, and noble-metal tellurides. The researcher will work together with PhD students, postdocs, and a research engineer, to perform the experiments.

Description of the work duties:

  • to perform synthesis, characterisation, and electrochemical experiments independently
  • to diagnose and troubleshoot the PXRD, Raman microscope, and electrochemical setup
  • supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • assist in seeking external research funding.

Qualifications

Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD.

Required qualifications:

  • a PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position. 
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
  • Extensive practical experience with PXRD, Rietveld refinement, and Raman spectroscopy.
  • Extensive practical experience in synthesis of lead-free piezoceramic sodium potassium niobate.
  • Practical experience in studying pseudocapacitance/ion intercalation via electrochemical methods.
  • Experience with supervision at the bachelor and master level.

Additional requirements:

  • Expertise in the synthesis of polyoxoniobates and -tantalates.
  • Experience in the synthesis of group V dichalcogenides (Nb, Ta: S, Se, Te).
  • Experience in synthesis of Ag-Te materials.
  • Experience in securing external funding to lead independent projects.

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for 1 year at 100 % of full time. The position is not a teaching position and is covered by the Flexitime Agreement for T/A staff. Researchers who wish to become university teachers can apply for a position as assistant senior lecturer or senior lecturer in an open competition.
