Description of workplace
Diangostic Radiology, ITM, Lund University conducts research related to medical imaging diagnostics. LUCI (Lund University breast Cancer Imaging) is a cross-disciplinary group – lead by professor Sophia Zackrisson – with a main research interest in innovative imaging modalities and methods in breast cancer diagnostics, focusing on screening and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). LUCI is well-established, with an extensive group of affiliated PhD-students, postdocs and more senior researchers from diverse disciplines, with a close collaboration between primarily medical radiation physics and diagnostic radiology. LUCI has many national and international collaborators. The group is located at Skåne university hospital (SUS) in Malmö.

Project description
The goal is to develop AI-based multi-modal prediction models for breast cancer, using both medical images (X-ray, pathology) and clinical and tumor genomic data. The project AID4BC (AI-based Precision Diagnostics and Decision Support for Breast Cancer) is a so-called NEST(Novelty, Excellence, Synergy, and Teams) project lead by Karolinska Institutet and Linköping University together with Lund University and Uppsala University as partners, and is financed by SciLifeLab and the Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) and the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

Work tasks and responsibilities
A postdoctoral position at Lund University will provide opportunities for scientific and educational development. It is mainly a research position, but there is also the opportunity to take part in formal pedagogical training. Teaching may be a part of the position.

As a postdoctoral researcher you will head project planning and co-ordination with other academic institutions, as well as the performance of relevant project tasks under supervision. Your duties will include handling of imaging- and tabular data, data matching, programming, procressing, analysis and preparation of scientific publications.  The position also includes participating in the daily activities of the research group, collection of patient data, supervising PhD and master students as well as producing material for scientific publications. Other tasks within the research group may also potentially be included.

Qualifications
The position requires:

  • A comleted PhD or equivalent in biomedical engineering, engineering physics, computer science, medical physics or other field relevant for the project. The PhD degree must be completed no later than at time the employment decision is made. 
  • The ability to develop and perform high-quality research.
  • Programming skills.
  • Excellent oral and written English proficiency.
  • Good ability cooperate with others, social ability and communicative skills as well as being dedicated, analytical and organized. 

Merits for this position:

  •  PhD acquired within three years of last application date. 
  • Documented pedagogical experience.
  • Experience in image analysis and/or computer vision, especially in the context of medical imaging Development, implementation and validation of AI tools and software related to the medical field
  • Experience of specific software and programming languages, specifically ones suitable for machine learning, e.g. PyTorch or TensorFlow. 
  • Strong ability in spoken and written Swedish. 

Assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on scientific merits and potential as researchers. Special consideration will be given to scientific ability in the specific subject.

About the position
The position is limited to two years with a preliminary start date of 1 March 2026 or by agreement. It is a full-time position.

A postdoctoral position is limited to two years with the possibility to extend to three years according to collective agreement for postdocs (The Swedish Agency for Government Employers). A postdoctoral position is intended as an initial step in a scientific career and as an opportunity to develop key competencies as a researcher.
