Description of the workplace

The postdoctoral position is linked to the Division of Clinical Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University. However, all work will be in close collaboration with the Acoustofluidics research group at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, at the Faculty of Engineering, in our well-equipped laboratories at the Biomedical Centre at Lund University. You find more information on our research website. We care about creating a positive, respectful, and stimulating environment. We value communication and collaboration and a workplace that promotes learning and development for all employees. We are also committed to building a safe and positive environment for all employees through mutual respect and tolerance.

Description of the project

The position encompasses research and development within the field of biomedical engineering with an emphasis on proteomics and acoustofluidic cell sorting. This project focuses on investigation of proteomic alterations in isolated circulating tumour cells (CTCs) from cancer patients with a metastatic disease, at a single cell level.

Work duties and responsibilities

At Lund University, a postdoctoral position should provide opportunities for scientific and pedagogical qualifications. The research will encompass the independent planning and performing of the necessary experiments to develop methods to investigate proteomic alterations in isolated CTCs, combined with methods to enrich and separate CTCs from blood. This will include, cell culturing, microfluidic and flow cytometer cell sorting and operation of mass spectrometers (MS), as well as multi-omics data integration and analysis.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research within single cell proteomics
  • Publication of research results in well-respected scientific journals
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking research funding
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • PhD or equivalent foreign degree within three years before the last day for application.
  • The PhD must be completed no later than the time the employment decision is made
  • Documented ability to conduct research of high quality
  • Documented experience in teaching/tutoring students with good references.
  • Documented experience in biological mass spectrometry and MS-based proteomics.
  • Practical experience in operating and maintaining LC-MS systems.
  • Good knowledge in bioinformatics, such as analysis and interpretation of MS-based proteomic data.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Meritorious for the position are:

The assessment of applicants will be based primarily on their scientific merit and potential as researchers. Emphasis will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area.

  • Experience in bioanalytical methods for protein analysis
  • Practical experience in biological sample preparation for proteomic analysis, preferably at single cell level.
  • Experience in performance, evaluation and maintenance of nLC-MS/MS systems.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in statistical and bioinformatics analysis of proteomic data.
  • Experience within microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technology.
  • Experience in PTM analysis, such as phosphorylation, glycosylation.
  • Experience from programming e.g. in R, Phyton, or equivalent.

You should be highly motivated to independently pursue the proteomic analysis of CTCs, including bioinformatic analysis, within an international and interactive research group.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience, collaborative and other skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
