PhD position within the Infection Medicine Research Group
The research group is led by Johan Malmström, whose goal is to develop methods within proteomics to promote the implementation of precision medicine in sepsis. The group consists of senior researchers, postdocs, and PhD students with expertise in clinical medicine, cell and molecular biology, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

Work assignments
The PhD project will consist of three parts that integrate detailed immunological insights with systems biology.

  • Part 1: Evaluation of proteomic changes caused by molecular substances to identify new drug candidates with potential for sepsis treatment.
  • Part 2: Investigation of changes in immune cell metabolic processes or immunological stimulations by examining temporal proteomic changes during the immune response.
  • Part 3: Combining these insights with new methods for stratifying patient subgroups to support the implementation of data-driven precision medicine in sepsis.

Qualifications

Requirements for the Position:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in biomedicine or equivalent
  • Documented experience in large-scale quantitative and functional proteomics
  • Experience in sample preparation of cells for quantitative proteomics
  • Strong skills in quantitative proteomics data analysis using R, as well as knowledge in bioinformatics
  • Solid understanding of mitochondrial functions and cellular metabolism
  • Experience in cell culture

Merits:

  • Experience in screening molecules in cell models
  • Bioinformatics with a focus on pathway enrichment analyses (e.g., Metascape)
  • Understanding of the pathophysiology of sepsis
  • Knowledge of drug development and repurposing strategies
  • Experience working with human blood
  • Previous experience with ELISA and Mesoscale
  • Good proficiency in Swedish, both spoken and written, to enable communication with healthcare professionals

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
