The Department of Process and Life Science Engineering (PLE) at Lund University is located at Kemicentrum, one of the Nordics' largest centers for education and research in the field of chemistry. PLE has around 150 employees, of which around 65 are PhD students. The department offers a broad competence in areas such as chemical engineering, food technology, biotechnology and technical microbiology. The research and education at PLE spans the entire subject of chemistry and includes both undergraduate and graduate education. The Department of Process Engineering and Applied Biosciences (PLE) at Lund University works actively to ensure a good working environment through several initiatives and routines. Description of the workplace

The position is placed at the Division of Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology, Department of Process & Life Science Engineering, located in the Center for Chemistry & Chemical Engineering in Lund (www.biotek.lu.se). The Division conducts research and education at undergraduate and graduate level within various branches of biotechnology. One of the important research areas is industrial biotechnology which involves development of biological catalysts and sustainable processes for biobased chemicals, bioenergy and foods. The Division is highly international and strives to maintain gender balance.

Work duties

As a research assistant your tasks can vary, and the tasks should give an insight into the academic world at the faculty where you are studying.

The employment as a research assistant concerns participation in a research project CROSS and involves microbial and enzymatic transformation of a by-product of biofuel industry to valuable products.

The duties include:

  • Laboratory work on
    • optimization of reaction conditions for microbial and enzyme catalysed reactions,
    • product separation and purification, analysis of products, data analysis, preparation of samples for evaluation
    • separation of sugars
  • Preparation of a report and assist in writing of a manuscript for publication.
  • oral presentations in the research group and for collaborating partners in the project.

Qualification requirements
Only those admitted to first- and second-cycle courses and study programmes at the faculty may be employed as teaching assistants.
Required qualifications:

  • admitted to master program in biotechnology or an equivalent relevant discipline
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English 
  • studied courses in bioprocess technology, molecular biotechnology, enzyme technology, advanced analytical chemistry, bioanalysis and bioinformatics
  • Laboratory experience in biocatalysis, bacterial cultivation, chromatographic (HPLC/GC), NMR and titration analyses

Additional requirements (ex.):

  • Good knowledge in biocatalysis
  • Knowledge of performing risk analysis
  • Consideration will be given to good cooperation ability, drive and independence, and how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the ability needed for the research project.
  • Very good communication ability via oral presentations and written reports

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for the period 2026-01-17 until 2026-06-07 (Spring semester 2026) at 50 per cent of full time, the employment is covered by the Flexitime Agreement for T/A staff. The employment as a Teaching Assistant is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2017:284), 5 chapter 8-12 §§.
