The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace

The role will include engagement with two key national competence centres with a broad industrial and academic network: Swedish Electromobility Centre and Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre.

You will be part of the Competence and Excellence for the Electrification of the Transport System (COMPEL) framework. COMPEL is a collaboration between three universities: Lund University, Chalmers University of Technology, and Uppsala University. The platform aims to ensure Sweden's long-term competitiveness in battery development and electrification of the transport sector. The work will be carried out in a battery pack testing facility which is unique in the Nordic countries

Subject description

Batteries play an important role in the energy transition, especially in transport and grid applications. To accelerate the transition to fossil-free societies, it is crucial to understand battery lifetime in different contexts.

In this position, you’ll be part of a new research team, including senior researchers and PhD students, combining expertise to advance battery research. You’ll draw on advanced models that assess how charging, temperature, and balancing influence battery state-of-health—and bring these insights to life through experimental validation in a unique battery pack testing facility. The position will be funded by COMPEL and collaboration within the framework is strongly encouraged.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

This postdoc offers a dynamic mix of hands-on experiments, data analysis, and research communication. Your core responsibilities will include the formulation, implementation and experimental validation of models and hypotheses.

This implies substantial hands-on experimental activities: design and development of experimental setups (including fixtures, circuit boards and control), developing cycling protocols.

Since you will be part of a new research team, you will also have a key role in the development of our experimental research facilities, with the flexibility to expand your role as the project evolves.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience with experimental techniques related to battery testing such as classification, cycling, reference performance tests, and prototype design.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good collaborative skills, initiative and the ability to solve work tasks independently

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge of experimental analysis of batteries.
  • Interest in power electronics, power systems, electromobility.
  • Programming skills in relevant languages, e.g. Python or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge about battery pack testing and design.
  • Experience with statistics and data-processing methods.
  • Keen interest or experience with battery modelling techniques.
  • Teaching experience.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
