Work duties

The position involves independently conducting catch-and-release fishing sessions using rod and reel in accordance with standardized research protocols. The employee will assist with field sampling of wild fish, including capture, handling, measuring, and documentation. The role includes maintaining and operating research equipment, such as electrofishing gear and telemetry-related instruments. The assistant will also help with aquaria maintenance and fish husbandry at the university, including basic tank care and monitoring water quality. The position requires careful, ethical treatment of fish and collaboration with the research team in supporting ongoing experimental work.

Qualifications 

• Relevant education in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Experience with electrofishing
• Experience with field sampling of wild fish (capture, handling, measuring)
• Ability to independently conduct rod-and-reel catch-and-release sessions
• Experience safely handling large predatory fish (e.g., pike) during landing, unhooking, measuring, and release
• Ability to follow standardized research protocols
• Experience maintaining aquaria and caring for captive fish

Other merits

• Boat handling or small-craft operation experience
• Basic competence in data recording, annotation, or spreadsheet handling
• Experience with animal welfare principles or ethical handling practices
• Good teamwork and communication skills
• Previous participation in field-based ecological or fisheries research

We are looking for a person who is reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently in the field and laboratory. The applicant should be able to take responsibility for assigned tasks and perform them with high accuracy and professionalism. Strong practical skills and the ability to execute procedures confidently are essential. Collaboration with the research team is expected when needed, but the role primarily requires independent initiative and consistent performance.

Terms of employment 

Fixed-term employment for 6 months during the period of 260301-260831. 

Scope of the employment: 40%
