The Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, The Faculty of Engineering, LTH, is unique in covering the entire communication technology stack — from wireless hardware and radio systems to networked applications and secure systems. Within the department, the Secure and Networked Systems Division works broadly with research within Networked systems, Applied AI/ML, Computer Security and Cryptography. The division runs several research projects through different large research collaboration platforms and arranges extensive workshops and seminar series, making the research at the division visible to larger audiences. Cross-disciplinary projects are formed through our research collaboration platforms and national and international research networks, contributing to a dynamic research environment.
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. In short, you will be trained to think critically and analytically, to solve problems independently using the right methods, and to develop an awareness of research ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, to develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

The position will be part of NextG2Com – a Vinnova Competence Center coordinated by Lund University. NextG2Com is a competence center focused on future advanced communication systems that integrate wireless communication technology and networks, software, data, and security through relevant application areas (advanced digitalization).
In NextG2Com, Lund University collaborates with industry and public-sector actors with support from Vinnova. As part of NextG2Com, the doctoral student will have the opportunity to collaborate with industry partners and other doctoral students within the center, participate in meetings, and engage in various center activities.

You will work in the ELLIIT project “Safety-critical Intelligent machines with cloud assisted AI and control”, which includes a collaboration with Linköping University. The first part of the project will explore cloud-assisted control systems with strict real-time requirements and safety-related control objectives, mainly for cloud robotics applications. The second part of the project will explore cloud-assisted ML inference with strict real-time requirements and safety-related objectives. The third part of the project will explore offloading of AI and control systems based on hyper-distributed computing infrastructures, such as envisioned for next generation communication and computational infrastructures. A core part of the project is to develop an experimental testbed with complete end-to-end networked applications, based on the research infrastructures available at Lund University, for example the 5G lab and the LTH Robotics Lab.
