Description of the workplace
The Neurodegenerative Research group is focused on defining and understanding biological processes in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. We analyze large datasets collected from patients and cognitively unimpaired volunteers, who undergo extensive testing with neuroimaging, biomarker measurements and neuropsychological testing. Our group applies sophisticated statistical tools to these unique and state-of-the-art datasets in order to model processes related to aging and disease. The project assistant will join a growing multidisciplinary team of neuroscientists, statisticians, biologists and engineers, who are dedicated to increasing understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. The long-term goal of our research is to contribute to the development of new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases where effective treatments are still lacking. The research group is led by Dr. Jacob Vogel, and this position is located at the Biomedical Center (BMC) in Lund.

We aim to create a positive, supportive and inclusive work environment based on respect and mutual consideration. We strive to create an environment that promotes development and is stimulating to all employees.

What we offer
Lund University is a public authority, which means that you will have special benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension. We also have a flexitime agreement that creates good conditions for work/life balance.

Work duties and responsibilities
Our lab is investigating heterogeneity in the expression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology in living humans. We have identified major subtypes of AD, and we are using various approaches to further understand them, including multi-omics data, postmortem histopathology, and assembly of massive tau-PET imaging datasets. The Project Assistant will aid these pursuits through processing and analyzing large-scale tau-PET data, adapting existing analysis pipelines, and analyzing new data. Other tasks within the research group may also be assigned. The position may also involve international travel to support training and career development.

Qualifications
Requirements for the position are:

  • M.Sc. in engineering, neuroscience, statistics, quantitative biology, physics, mathematics or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years additional relevant research experience beyond MSc
  • Fluency in Python or R programming language
  • Experience with curation, preprocessing and/or analysis of neuroimaging data
  • Excellent communications skills in English, both verbal and written
  • High intrinsic motivation.

Merits for the position are:

  • Direct experience with analysis of tau-PET data
  • Experience working with large (>2000) sample sizes
  • Strong publication track record indicating ability to complete high-impact work
  • Experience working in the field of neurodegenerative disease
  • Familiarity with git and GitHub
  • Competence using Linux-based high-performance parallel computing systems
