Description of the workplace

The Department of Building and Environmental Technology has a stimulating and international environment consisting of doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and teachers from many parts of the world. Here, research and teaching take place in an open and progressive climate with challenges and collaborations both within academia and with industrial partners, both nationally and internationally. The workplace will be the Department of Technical Water Resources Science at the Department of Building and Environmental Technology at LTH. Research and teaching are conducted here on how water resides and is transported in nature and in the built environment. This includes studies on rain and stormwater, how water reach watercourses, floods and methods to eliminate or limit the negative impact of floods on the environment, the flow of water in land and watercourses, factors that affect water use, water quality, coastal hydraulics and erosion processes. The department has approximately 30 employees and approximately 20 doctoral students. The advertised position will be placed in the hydraulics and hydrology group, which studies precipitation, runoff and flow in watercourses.

Work duties

The researcher will work in the project STORM_SAFE, which is an INTERREG North Sea Programme project, co-financed by the EU in an international collaboration between 11 parties in the North Sea region. https://www.interregnorthsea.eu/stormsafe/about-us

The focus is on developing smart systems to control and regulate water, using control systems to handle complex challenges with high water flows. The researcher will particularly delve into the Mölndalsån in Gothenburg to investigate how water can be better regulated and create knowledge for future systems.

You will have special responsibility for evaluating existing hydraulic models over the Mölndalsån that the City of Gothenburg has developed in its high water protection program with regard to protection against floods. You will also integrate relevant parts of the models developed by the other parties in STORM_SAFE for flood protection for primarily the City of Gothenburg. You will use flow models for the North Sea and the Göta River in your work to calculate which different cases can lead to flood risk and how the protection of people, buildings and infrastructure can be guaranteed through hydraulic control of the watercourses in Gothenburg, with an emphasis on the Mölndalsån River. The position includes meetings with representatives of the City of Gothenburg and several project meetings with other partners in STORM_SAFE from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Germany..

  • collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualifications

Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD.

Required qualifications :

  • a PhD in hydrology, hydraulics or water resources engineering or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position. 
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
  • good knowledge in the subject of water resources engineering and hydrodynamics
  • experience of programming in Python and working with GIS-based data
  • Self-motivated, Persistent, Collaborative, Initiative-taking, Stable, Structured, Independent, Creative
  • Written, analytical and mathematical skills.

Additional requirements :

  • knowledge of flood planning
  • Experience of international project cooperation and work in EU-funded projects
  • Experience of statistical analysis and simulation, including Monte-Carlo simulations

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for 2026-06-01—2027-05-31at 100 per cent of full time.

Researchers are covered by a local collective agreement on annual working hours for researchers and assistant researchers. The planning of annual working hours is done in dialogue between the manager and the employee.
