Description of the workplace 

LUNARC is a centre at Lund University that provides services for high-performance computing (HPC), visualisation, and storage. LUNARC collaborates with research groups and offers this expertise and courses in scientific computation, visualisation, and efficient use of these resources. LUNARC currently operates several computing and visualisation resources with associated storage. To improve the usability of these resources, an interactive HPC service (a remote desktop environment) with hardware-accelerated graphics has been developed. This service can provide customised environments for different research groups.

LUNARC employees have expertise in many areas, enabling us to support our researchers in a range of ways, from hardware and visualisation to storage and development projects. We collaborate with several research groups and infrastructures, including NAISS, MAX IV, and Bioinformatics. LUNARC currently has 13 employees, including systems engineers, application experts, and developers. LUNARC is a division within the Department of Construction Sciences at LTH and a shared resource for all of Lund University. LUNARC is located in newly renovated premises with comfortable meeting and lounge areas, and staff spaces.

Work duties 

The appointment is part of a significant investment in high-performance computing, storage, and visualisation around the computing resource COSMOS and a commitment within NAISS, where LUNARC is a branch.

As a Staff scientist/Application Expert, you are the link between researchers and the compute, storage, and visualisation resources that LUNARC provides. This includes helping the researcher use the resources efficiently and straightforwardly. This can, for example, mean installing and optimising software that researchers need on the resources. You will also aid researchers in developing computational software and in refining their workflows using LUNARC and NAISS resources.

The tasks include:

  • Provide user support to researchers with different scientific backgrounds to ensure they use LUNARC and NAISS resources in an optimal way.
  • Provide advice and development of the researchers' calculation software.
  • Develop researchers' workflows around computation, visualisation, and storage.
  • Develop and give training for users in the form of courses, seminars, and workshops.
  • Develop user documentation and web pages to make it easier to use LUNARC's resources.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications for the position include having completed a PhD (or a similar degree). in numerical analysis, computer science, image analysis, physics, or a related discipline.

The applicants must be able to express themselves in English (in speech and writing). The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential for the position.

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • Use of Linux / Unix-based systems.
  • Installation and maintenance of scientific software.
  • Scientific programming in one or more of the following languages Python, MATLAB, C/C++, Fortran.
  • English presentation skills in speech and writing.
  • Experience in education/teaching.
  • Independent work on projects together with researchers and research groups.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Image analysis and visualization.
  • Knowledge in one or more Python-based frameworks such as Plotly, PyQt, Pandas, Matplotlib or Seaborn and more.
  • Parallel programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA)
  • Knowledge in the scientific build environment EasyBuild.
  • General knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. AI/ML.
  • Knowledge of Swedish.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
