Description of the workplace

The position will be placed at the division of Computer Vision and Machine Learning at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is an institution affiliated with both the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and the Faculty of Science at Lund University. Within the division of Computer Vision and Machine Learning, there are several senior researchers and approximately 20 doctoral candidates. Research in computer vision began in the mid-1980s and currently encompasses (i) Geometry and computer vision (including analysis of video, audio, radio, and radar signals), (ii) Medical image analysis, and (iii) Machine learning/artificial intelligence. The division boasts extensive experience in fundamental research within computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as a track record of translating such findings into practical applications for end-users.

The position is funded by seed-funding provided by Lund University to enable collaborative work between the two strategic research areas eSSENCE and NanoLund (https://www.essenceofescience.se/ and https://www.nano.lu.se/ ), which means that the postdoc will benefit from being part of these two networks.

Subject description

The project involves mathematical modelling of complex fluid dynamics, in particular viscoelastic flows in nano-structures. The work involves mathematical modelling and machine learning both using simulated and real data.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

The research will focus on the development and application of advanced modelling and machine learning methods, and may involve the following areas:

  • Dimensionality reduction.
  • Data-driven methods for estimating dynamical models
  • Data-driven methods for estimating discriminant models
  • Design and use of autoencoders (VAEs, GANs), diffusion models, and other ML methods for analysing and discovering patterns in probability distributions in latent space.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

You have:

  • very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • scientific publications in mathematical modelling, computer vision and/or machine learning
  • high motivation and the ability to quickly acquire new techniques
  • good ability to plan and structure your work, as demonstrated by previous work described in your application
  • strong collaboration and communication skills, documented through previous projects

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • a good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • teaching skills.

It is considered an advantage if you have:

  • documented ability to collaborate with researchers from different disciplines
  • experience of collaboration with industry and/or policymakers
  • knowledge and experience in image processing and computer vision
  • knowledge and experience in mathematical modelling
  • knowledge and experience in machine learning
  • ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
