Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 46 000 students and 8 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
The doctoral student will be part of the project “DEEP DIALOGUE: De-escalating Extremism and Polarisation through Dialogue,” funded by the Horizon Europe funding scheme of the European Union. The project aims to examine when, how, and why polarization turns into radicalization among European youth, map feedback loops between polarization and radicalization, and test which dialogue-based interventions can promote democratic participation, trust, and social cohesion. The project is a collaboration of 14 partners from eight countries and is coordinated by Lund University.
The doctoral project will focus on the analysis of social media data around political events. These include national elections in France, Italy, Hungary, and Romania, as well as armed conflicts (e.g., Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Hamas). The Horizon project collects data from these cases across four platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, Telegram, and TikTok), which the doctoral project will analyze to classify narratives and to assist with designing early-warning dashboards for detecting disinformation and hostile narratives.
The doctoral project will be integrated into and work alongside the broader Horizon consortium, which uses large-scale surveys, focus groups, netnography, and experiments to achieve its aims.
