Assistant researcher in in neurodegenerative disease

Description of the workplace
The Neurodegenerative Research group is focused on defining and understanding biological processes in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. We analyze large datasets collected from patients and cognitively unimpaired volunteers, who undergo extensive testing with neuroimaging, biomarker measurements and neuropsychological testing. Our group applies sophisticated statistical analyses to these unique and state-of-the-art datasets to model processes related to aging and disease. The assistant researcher will join a growing multidisciplinary team of neuroscientists, statisticians, biologists and engineers, who are dedicated to increasing understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. The research group is led by Dr. Jacob Vogel, and this position is located at the Biomedical Center (BMC) in Lund.

Work duties and areas or responsibilities
As an assistant researcher, you will primarily participate in data analysis and project management. The project will involve synthesizing massive PET datasets using AI to build diagnostic tools with immediate clinical applications. We have amassed tens of thousands of PET scans measuring the primary neuropathologies of Alzheimer’s disease. We aim to build deep learning models that automatically process and quantify this data, as well as perform clinical visual reads that compete with or outperform human clinicians. as it pertains to research foci described above. Other work responsibilities may include: data curation and processing; composition, editing, or executing of computational scripts; presenting data and findings at internal and external research meetings; composition of scientific manuscripts; informal mentorship of and skill-sharing with other employees; and/or composition of grants and/or research fellowships. Other work duties may also occur.

Qualifications
The following are required for the position:

• Ph.D. in neuroscience, engineering, quantitative biology, or a related discipline;
• Research experience in the field of neurodegenerative disease;
• Experience with curation, preprocessing and/or analysis of neuroimaging data
• Documented experience with deep learning
• Familiarity and experience with high-performance cluster-based computing
• Competence in computational programming using python
• Ability to independently perform large-scale data analyses
• Excellent communications skills in English, both verbal and written
• A proven track record of research productivity
• Candidate should be thorough, detail-oriented, and should demonstrate an intrinsic motivation for research into neurodegenerative diseases

The following are considered to be a merit:

• Direct experience working with PET data
• Direct experience with the application of deep learning to medical imaging data
• Familiarity with git and GitHub
• Familiarity with best practices in reproducibility and open science, including containers and singularity images

Other
This is a full-time employment limited to 1 year with preliminary start date on or after November 1st, 2026, or according to agreement.
