The Department of Communication and Media offers high quality international research and education in media and communication studies, media history, journalism and rhetoric. Staff and students work within subjects from Social Sciences, and the Humanities and Theology. We offer teaching and learning at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in Swedish and English.
 
Our department has a dynamic research environment with state and privately funded research projects, international publications and collaboration, and regular research seminars and conferences with world class scholars from around the world. In media and communication studies, specifically, our research addresses media and communication structures and processes in modern life. We research television, film, print media, advertising, online media and mobile technologies, within the context of politics, society and culture.

The Department has international expertise in four areas:

  • democracy, participation and social media
  • gender, Health and society
  • audiences and popular culture
  • Children and digital media

Job specification

The post comprises teaching and research in media and communication studies. The post is planned to consist of 50 percent government-funded research and 50 percent teaching, including possible administrative duties. However, the proportions of research and teaching can be affected by, for instance, external research funding.

In addition to conducting high-quality research and education, the successful candidate is expected to be able to take responsibility for the development and administration of teaching programs and courses in the field of media and communication studies.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for appointment as an associate senior lecturer, applicants must have been awarded a PhD or corresponding foreign exam in media and communication studies. Applicants with a PhD in a related discipline can be considered eligible if they have both research and teaching experience in media and communication studies. Priority should be given to those who have been awarded a PhD within seven years prior to the deadline for applications.

Other requirements:

• documented pedagogical skills in the field of media and communication studies;
• good knowledge of both written and spoken English as well as Swedish (or another Scandinavian language).

Assessment criteria

As the position is meant to offer an opportunity for the holder to qualify for higher positions in his/her career, applicants who have completed their PhD within the past seven years will be given priority.
We invite applicants with a strong profile in teaching and research that can contribute to the development of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, international research publications and funding. Research and teaching experience in one or more of the department’s areas of expertise – democracy, participation and social media; gender, health and society; audiences and popular culture; children and digital media – is particularly desirable. The ability to interact with society and to inform others about research and developmental work is also taken into account. Teaching language will be both English and Swedish (or another Scandinavian language).

Promotion

An associate senior lecturer shall be promoted, on application, to an indefinite-term post as a senior lecturer, if (s)he is qualified for the post and is evaluated to be suitable in an assessment of the application, in accordance with the eligibility and assessment criteria for a promotion that is set up by the Faculty of Social Sciences and listed in the announcement/requirement profile. An associate senior lecturer may only apply for promotion once. The application shall be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences within three and a half years of the start of the candidate’s employment.

The general assessment criterion is that the applicant must demonstrate a strong progression in his or her ability to conduct teaching and research, which entails:

• Well documented research competence that is of significance to the subject and duties of the post.
This includes a good documented national and international standing as a researcher. A documented ability to publish internationally will be given particular weight.
• Well documented teaching competence. Particular weight will be given to documented skills in conducting teaching and supervision at different levels and that quality and breadth of teaching competence has developed over time.
• At least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Other qualifications that will be considered in the process of promotion are:

• Progression in academic leadership through an enhanced ability to develop, lead and implement education and research and/or demonstrated leadership/commitment to duties for the department as a whole.
• Ability to write applications for external research funding.
• Ability to interact with society and inform others about research and developmental work.
• Ability to cooperate.

Conditions

The purpose of a position as associate senior lecturer is that the holder becomes an independent researcher and teacher. The employment is temporary, maximum four years.
