The Division of Social Medicine and Global Health is an internationally recognized group with prominent multidisciplinary research, education and capacity development in Global Health. The research group is led by Professor Anette Agardh and has about 13 staff members, of wich 11 are doctoral students. The research group has multiple collaborations with a number of universities and public institutions, not only in Sweden, but also in many different countries around the world, including Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania. The research undertaken in the research group focus on areas such as health systems and economics, sexual and reproductive health and rights, youth health, substance abuse, mental health, health policy, environmental health, social capital, inequalities in health, and violence against women and other vulnerable populations.

 

Are you interested in a career in global health? Are you a curious, determined and independent person? We are looking for a doctoral student in health economics and health systems research, who is interested in economics and process evaluation methodologies and who wants to have a key role in a newly initiated research collaboration between Lund University and University of Zambia.

Funded by a grant from the Swedish Research Council the successful candidate will play a central role in designing and implementing an impact and process evaluation of the National Health Insurance Reform in Zambia as part of his or her phd-project.

 

Tasks

A doctoral student’s main task is to pursue postgraduate training including research, coursework and participation in teaching. Some administrative work will be part of the position. The person recruited will be part of a newly established research collaboration with the aim of deepening the understanding of the impact of the national health insurance reform in Zambia. The specific aim of the research project is to evaluate the impact of the insurance reform on reproductive and maternal health in the population. The student will contribute to the design, implementation, and the analysis of the project. This includes developing and field testing surveys for data collection, training of data collectors, managing and analyzing data, reporting and dissemination of results.

The person recruited is expected to work independently, but with support of a supervisor and 1-2 co-supervisors. The research project will require frequent, and sometimes extended, travel to Zambia during the course of the research training for  data collection and other implementation related tasks. Placement of this position is at Clinical Research Centre (CRC), located in Malmö, Sweden.

 

Eligibility
To meet the requirements for basic eligibility for postgraduate training, applicants must have a second-cycle qualification (master level) and completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle.

 

Assessment Criteria
The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. Candidates will be evaluated according to an assessment of their ability to benefit from and absorb the postgraduate training within the specific research project.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Medical Sciences or similar
  • 2 years of relevant work experience
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English

Personal abilities such as cooperation skills, drive, independence and the candidates potential to complete the postgraduate training within the stipulated time will be considered.

 

Additional merits

  • Knowledge and previous experience of using statistical/econometric methods for advanced data analysis, including methods for causal inference is desirable.
  • Previous experience from working in the field of global health will be an advantage.

 

Terms and conditions
Scope: Full time, 4-year time bound employment (According to HF 5 kap 7 para)

Starting date: Tentative starting date is 1st March 2021 or as otherwise agreed with the candidate.

The candidate will be employed as a doctoral student, which requires being admitted to the research training at Lund University. The research training corresponds to four years of full-time studies.
