Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
The Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; www.ludc.med.lu.se) opens a position for a bioinformatician. LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centers in the world with approximately 300 investigators and staff members working towards improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes. The Centre combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and clinical diabetes and endocrinology to achieve these goals. LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases with genome-wide data linked to national registries providing information on disease etiology, progression as well as outcome and treatment. The Centre has in-house platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics. Omics-information combined with extensive phenotyping allows a systems medicine approach to dissect the complexity of diabetes. A central theme of the Centre is to develop precision medicine to improve health and the quality of life of diabetic patients.
The Research group
The research group, Diabetic Complications is led by Professor Maria Gomez and consists of both research and technical staff. The business is located at the Clinical Research Center (CRC) in Malmö. Within the research group, we safeguard a good working environment with respect and consideration in our relationships with each other and we are constantly working to create the conditions for job satisfaction, development and participation for all employees. Hereby a driven bioinformatician for work in diabetes research. The position is, for the time being, full-time with the desired date of admission on 1 March 2020 or by agreement. Probationary period may be applied.
Job assignments
Applicants are invited to apply for a position as bioinformatician at LUDC. The bioinformatic unit consists today of approximately 12 people (including bioinformaticians, a biostatistician, a data manager, a computer engineer and an IT-data manager), but it is envisioned to expand in the next few years. Approximately half of the personnel is embedded in the various research groups and directly managed by the different LUDC PIs; while the other half is expected to support researchers at LUDC with bioinformatic expertise.
To further the mission of the LUDC, we are looking for an enthusiastic and talented person to lead all aspects of computational/bioinformatics pipeline development, implementation and management, to support common next generation sequencing (NGS) analyses, including but not limited to RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Exome-seq, GWAS.
The Human Tissue Laboratory (HTL) is a key resource for LUDC researchers. HTL collects human tissue samples for research purposes and performs central analyses on these materials, available to colleagues within the Centres at Lund and Uppsala Universities. An important part of the work that the candidate will perform for HTL will include quality control (QC), processing, and analysis of these data.
We also expect the successful applicant to interact with bench scientists, interpret requests, and deliver bioinformatic solutions to non-bioinformaticians. Also, the applicant is expected to participate in the training of LUDC staff and scientists in the selection and use of bioinformatic tools.
The bioinformatics field is broad and developing at an impressive pace. Thus, the candidate is expected to independently follow the development, work on improving existing pipelines and present alternative solutions on how to best utilize available data and resources.
