(cryo)microtome/ultratome slicing; and/or assisting the user in developing a relevant sample protocol. Where necessary perform or assist in optical microscopy/histology or other complementary methods to characterize the sample prior to X-ray measurements. Sample preparation will take place at the BioMedical Centre (BMC) in Lund.
  2. The position is part of a national network of nodes and the candidate is expected to liaise with facilities in Umeå, Göteborg and Stockholm to discuss and present sample preparation methods, storage and handling, and be of help to set up a safety protocol for MAX IV use together with the Biolab manager.
  3. Training scientists in optical imaging techniques and, where needed, in basic (cryo)sample preparation/handling methods for X-ray imaging/spectroscopy.
  4. Gather an in-depth understanding of relevant X-ray techniques at MAX IV, and identify their demands and constraints on (Life Science) sample preparation.
  5. If an interest exists: assist users with post-analysis, such as imaging data analysis or further sample characterization assistance. Assist with grant applications for equipment and identify services and instrumentation needed at MAX IV/LU for sample preparation & characterization in the long run.

Qualifications
The following qualifications are essential for the position:

  • PhD in a relevant Life Science field.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques for Life Science/Soft Matter samples (>2 years), such as:(cryo) microtomy and/or ultramicrotomy; freeze-drying; plunge freezing and cryo-protectant techniques.
  • Experience with optical microscopy and lab-based analysis techniques (histology, ICP-MS, etc.) within Life Science/Soft Matter (>2 years)
  • Proven ability to manage projects independently, support a team of scientists, and attract new relevant projects together with the team.
  • Knowledge of diverse Life Science/Soft Matter samples and their structure (eg. tissues, cells, animal/plant-based samples)

The following qualifications are an additional requirement:
