Your team
MAXPEEM is a photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) beamline at the 1.5GeV ring, which hosts a state-of-the-art aberration corrected low-energy electron microscope (LEEM) capable of imaging with high spatial resolution, down to less than 10 nm. MAXPEEM is used for research in a wide range of fields, including magnetism, 2D materials and graphene, surfaces and interfaces, industrial and biological research.

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?
MAX IV is looking for a postdoctoral researcher who enjoys working in an international and creative environment to join our team working at this advanced instrument. The candidate is expected to quicky learn the operation of the beamline and the microscope, and to ensure, together with the rest of the team, that user beamtimes are as productive as possible and that scientists feel excited when they receive an opportunity to come here. This requires from the beamline team a very strong focus on maintaining the performance of the equipment while simultaneously developing and commissioning new capabilities, new control and analysis software and new research projects. This often occurs in close collaboration with support functions at MAX-IV and external user groups.

As post-doc you are expected develop and drive your own research program, to which 50% of your working time is dedicated, exploiting the unique possibilities of the microscope. You will have access to a fraction of the in-house beamtime allocation for this and will also be expected to obtain additional time both at MAXPEEM and/or elsewhere through conventional competitive beamtime applications.

Collaborative projects with users at the frontiers of their field are highly encouraged, as well as side projects connected to instrument development and/or automation. At the beamline you will take a share of the user support, and you are invited to participate in the development of the MAXPEEM beamline, with an aim of widening the scope of techniques available for our user community.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Participate in the beamline operation, including acting as Local Contact for external groups
  • Develop your own research and publish results
  • Contribute to the beamline maintenance and development

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a relevant field
  • Experience with PEEM or LEEM measurements and data analysis, at a university laboratory, research center or synchrotron facility
  • A solid research plan centered around –but not limited to– the MAXPEEM end station
  • At least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

Below are seen as merits

  • Python scripting for instrument control and data analysis
  • Hands-on experience with building or developing ultra-high vacuum environments
  • Previous use of synchrotron facilities
  • Experience in equipment maintenance / support of users

As a person you are independent, motivated, flexible and understand the challenges of working in a multicultural environment.

Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the agreed first day of employment. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed before the three years.

Further information
This is full-time, fixed-term employment. A postdoctoral fellow is employed for at least two years and at most three years. A notice period of six months applies for both parties, in case of early termination of the contract. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01”).
