Description of the workplace

The position is based at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies (ACE), one of the divisions within the Department of History, Faculties of Humanities and Theology. The Centre was founded in 1997 to promote and develop research and education in Sweden on contemporary East and South-East Asia; its rapidly transforming societies, economies, and political systems. ACE is an interdisciplinary hub actively building new collaborations with institutions and researchers in Asia and beyond.

The successful candidate will also assist with research administrative tasks in the international research project Chinese Global Orders (The British Academy) led from the Centre. Some research tasks may also occur.

Work duties and areas of responsibility

The appointee will:

  • Teach courses on international relations in East and South-East Asia, modern Chinese history, and China’s global role. Teaching includes supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses as well as examination of master’s theses. Teaching and supervision are conducted in English, and consitute the main duties for the position. 
  • Assist with research administration, and potentially also with certain research tasks, within the research project Chinese Global Orders, under the direction of the project leader. This consitutes a minor part of the duties involved in the position. 

Qualifications

Requirements for employment are:

  • Completed second-cycle degree of value in view of the subject matter of the position and the duties that it will involve.
  • Good teaching ability and experience of teaching and supervision in higher education.
  • Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education of least five weeks or equivalent competence that has been acquired by other means.
  • Proficiency in Chinese sufficient for engaging with relevant primary sources.
  • Proficiency in English sufficient for conducting teaching and research.
  • Strong ability to collaborate and contribute to an inclusive academic environment.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • PhD in a field relevant to the subject matter of the post and the duties it will involve.
  • Expertise and experience in regional or area studies, preferably Asian Studies.
  • Experience of teaching and supervision in Asian Studies.

This is a full-time substitute position for the period 1 January 2026 until 30 June 2026.
