Your team
The General Safety Team is one of three teams in the Safety Group. The team consists of five permanently hired experts who collectively manage fire safety, chemical safety, shell protection and security, work environment safety, and environmental safety at MAX IV. The team is now looking to employ an expert within laser safety.

As the laser safety engineer, you will complement the team’s broad safety expertise with specialist knowledge in laser hazards, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance. You will support engineers, researchers, and technical staff working with a wide range of laser systems across the facility, providing expert guidance on safe design, procurement, operation, and commissioning of laser-based equipment. Together with your colleagues, you will contribute to maintaining a proactive and integrated safety culture at MAX IV.

MAX IV is looking for a laser safety engineer who will take the lead on ensuring the safe use of laser systems across a world-class research environment. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your expertise in laser safety, regulatory compliance, and risk assessment to support cutting-edge science and engineering teams working with diverse and advanced laser systems. You will play a central role in shaping laser safety practices from early design stages to implementation, ensuring adherence to international and Swedish laser safety standards. You will be supported by a strong network of engineers, researchers, and technical specialists who collaborate to develop safe, practical, and integrated solutions.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Be the main laser safety officer for MAX IV, which includes providing guidelines, trainings and management tools for laser safety implementation
  • Take the lead in assessing laser, UV and non-coherent light sources safety at MAX IV and implementing necessary measures to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards (e.g., AFS 2023:10, relevant sections of SS-EN 60825)
  • Implement and coordinate a laser safety working group
  • Be able to lead the risk assessments and the SRSs for the personnel safety system (PSS) for lasers to other stakeholders
  • Maintain and update the laser inventory that includes system classifications and compliance records
  • Perform and document regular laser safety audits across the facility in collaboration with other safety experts and functions at MAX IV
  • Provide guidance to engineering and research teams on integrating laser safety by design during early development phases
  • Be able to validate safety functionality for new or modified laser installations.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of practical experience working with optics and/or lasers and laser safety in industrial or scientific environments
  • A good command of English, both written and spoken
  • Demonstrated ability to manage laser safety, including classification, risk assessment and compliance
  • Solid understanding of relevant safety standards, such as the IEC 60825 series
  • Interest and ability to increase the knowledge on safety aspects which may be necessary in future projects with laser, UV and non-coherent light sources
  • Understanding safety documentation workflow from concept to validation.

Below are seen as merits

  • A M.Sc. degree in physics, engineering physics, electrical engineering or another relevant discipline
  • Knowledge and experience with the Swedish regulatory framework for laser safety
  • Experience in project management, including coordinating cross-functional teams and managing timelines
  • Experience in handling UV and the non-coherent light sources safety
  • Experience working in large-scale scientific or industrial facilities
  • Practical understanding of risk assessment tools and software
  • Experience in developing technical documentation, safety procedures, and audit reports
  • Experience with automation technology
  • Experience with machine safety and/or process safety systems
  • Good command of Swedish.

You are comfortable taking full ownership of laser safety at the facility and enjoy supporting colleagues with clear, constructive guidance.
