Work duties and areas of responsibility

We are looking for a student in the Physical Sciences or Engineering with a keen interest in X-ray detectors to assist with the testing and adaptation of cutting edge technologies at MAX IV Laboratory. The successful candidate would work with both the Controls Group (KITS) and Sample Environment and Detectors Group (SEDS) on various tasks towards the goal of characterizing and adapting detectors for use in experiments at MAX IV beamlines.

The 'JUNGFRAU', a detector on-loan to MAX IV from the Paul Scherer Institute (PSI), represents a new class of hybrid pixel detectors designed specifically for the next generation of light sources (Free Electron Lasers (FELs) and Synchrotrons). We envision the student taking responsibility for the analysis of data acquired with this detector as part of our goal to understand it's operation and capabilities. A pixel-by-pixel analysis would likely include: calibration of the the gain, energy resolution, and the effects of sensor cooling and temperature stability on performance.

Depending on the students interests, there will also be opportunities to work on other projects: developing detector controls software and hardware assembly, as well the chance to participate in tests at MAX IV beamlines.
