Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Controls & IT

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Your team

You will join the Detectors and Scientific Software group, a small international team within Controls and IT (KITS) with diverse scientific backgrounds, who work on data acquisition, processing and analysis.  A crucial aspect of the MAX IV scientific infrastructure are the detectors used for taking data at the beam lines. In this domain we work closely with the wider KITS organisation (software, network and computing infrastructure) and with the Sample Environment and Detectors (SEDS) group.

Would you like to work at the brightest light source in the world?

MAX IV are looking for a Detector Software Engineer to work on the integration, commissioning and support of detectors and their associated readout hardware and software.

The main role of the successful candidate will be to ensure the optimal operation of the commercially supplied detectors, both position measuring and energy resolving, including mega pixel photon counting detectors, sCMOS cameras and delay lines. They will work closely with the DAQ engineers of KITS but also with the beamline scientists in order to understand their detector use cases. There is also scope to seek out collaborations with other institutes who are engaged in detector research and development in order to bring custom solutions to the MAX IV beam lines where needed.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Work with KITS and the beamlines on the integration of detectors to the control and DAQ systems, combining an understanding of the underlying principle of operation of the detectors with the ability to deliver robust scientific software engineering solutions
  • Understand the detector needs of the beamlines and advise during procurement of detector systems
  • Liaise with suppliers, trouble shoot new and existing detectors, follow up with suppliers on any fixes or updates
  • Carry out Site Acceptance Tests and other performance and characterization tests of different detectors (photon counting, charge integrating, energy resolving…)
  • Produce documentation for the support of the installed detector systems
  • Participate in international conferences and workshops through articles and presentations

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • Degree in physics, engineering, computer science or equivalent qualifications or experience
  • Experience working with (ideally photon) detectors for scientific applications
  • A proven ability in software development and data analysis in Python or C++ in a linux environment
  • Good communication skills, ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels in and outside MAX IV
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in the use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs etc.

Below are seen as merits

  • Higher degree in a relevant field
  • Experience in detector development
  • Experience with high performance/distributed computing and networking
  • Experience with analysis of data in HDF5 format
  • Significant work experience from synchrotrons or other large experimental facilities
  • Working in an international environment

As a person you are

  • A self-starter with a passion for learning new technologies
  • A team player committed to the goals of the team
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Able to listen and respect others
  • A problem solver
