Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Spectroscopy

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light. As a national laboratory, MAX IV is operated in agreement with governmental regulations, and in compliance with major funders such as the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the Wallenberg Foundation. 250 people are currently employed at MAX IV Laboratory, and 16 beamlines are funded. The facility is in a ramp-up phase with 3 beamlines now receiving users and 13 more scheduled to be commissioned and built to receive users within the next few years. The facility is dimensioned for 25-28 beamlines.

Beamline description
MAXPEEM is photoelectron spectromicroscopy beamline which houses state-of-the-art aberration corrected low energy electron microscope capable of imaging with high (less than 10nm) spatial resolution. We are now looking for a post-doc who enjoys working in an international and creative environment, to join our team working at this advanced instrument.

Job description
As a post-doc, you will be involved in continuing development of the spectromicroscopy beamline (for more information, see the webpage: www.maxiv.lu.se) and the scope of techniques that can be offered to our user community. Automation of experiments together with the development of the control systems is on the task list. The candidate is expected to develop his/her own research programme exploiting unique possibilities of the advanced microscope. User support may be an important part of the activity which will provide opportunities for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field.

Qualifications
The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in physics or another field relevant to the beamline.
The candidate should demonstrate experience in several of following areas:

  • Computer control, automation of experiments, programming and data analysis
  • Write and publish articles in peer reviewed journals/digests that highlight findings from research and experimental activities ensuring consistency with the highest standards of academic publication
  • Defining and exploring research directions especially within the low energy photoelectron microscopy or in related techniques
  • Managing instrumentation projects.
  • Experience in development and operation in LEEM is a merit.

The work requires very good communication and interpersonal skills, a solid command of English, both oral and written.

This is a two year temporary position.
