About FlexPES

FlexPES is an undulator-based soft x-ray beamline, which is under commissioning now and has to become operational in 2019. It has two branches and can accommodate up to four end stations, which are planned to be used for high-resolution spectroscopy (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS)) on surfaces and in gas phase. One end station is dedicated to UHV surface science, and two more are for photoemission and electro-ion coincidence studies on gases, clusters and liquids. There is also a port for the user-defined experiments.

A description of the beamline can be found at www.maxiv.lu.se/accelerators-beamlines/beamlines/flexpes.

Job description

The position is mainly associated with the UHV surface & material science branch of the beamline, and is focused on the candidate's own research projects in these fields. Therefore, the candidates are expected not only to be experienced in surface science and UHV-related techniques but also propose competitive own ideas for research projects, which can be realized at FlexPES. These research projects can cover areas of molecular adsorption, on-surface reactions, growth and characterization of 2D materials, thin films, nanostructures, and similar. An ability to establish collaborative research with other groups outside MAX IV and involve them into activities at FlexPES would be a strong advantage.

Once employed, the candidate will work together with the beamline team with commissioning and operation of the beamline, and participate in various development projects at the UHV surface science and station. These projects include automation of experiments, development of control systems, mechanical design of new equipment, etc.

Also, the candidate is expected to participate in giving support to the user groups, with the chance to get involved in collaborations with various users and beamline staff, and pursue his/her own research and/or development projects.

The candidate will have a possibility to conduct his/her own research with the STM system (available at MAX IV) and may participate in beamtimes at other synchrothron facilities.

Requirements

- The candidate must hold a PhD in physics, solid state chemistry, or similar, with experience in the use and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum equipment.
- Strong interest and sufficient skills (documented experience) in formulating and driving research projects, performing data analysis and preparing scientific publications are required.
- Proven experience in NEXAFS and XPS with synchrothron radiation is required.
- Experience in other spectroscopic techniques, advanced data analysis and/or programming is a strong plus.
- Experience in scanning tunneling microscopy is a plus.
- Ability to work in a team.
- Good communication skills, and a good command of English are necessary.

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the doctoral degree or equivalent is completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

This is a 2 year temporary employment.
